Why the M-23 Katana is better than the M-11 Wraith.

First off, I must say, I had a wonderful time witnessing an anonymous fellow tearing apart legions of banshees with one weapon.

This weapon was, of course, the M-23 Katana. This person weilded it so well, that I daresay that it was the best shotgun ever to exist in their hands alone.

However, let us move on to the reasons for why the Wraith is worse than the M-23 Katana, the primordial one.

First, despite the greater raw damage of the wraith, the M-23 Katana fires faster.

Second, The M-23 Katana holds more ammo, unlike the wraith.

Third, the M-23 Katana is freely available to all and not hidden to us by the vengeful RNG, unlike the wraith.

Fourth, the M-23 Katana has a faster refire time, unlike the wraith.

Fifth, the M-23 Katana is easy to upgrade, unlike the wraith.

Sixth, the M-23 Katana is true to the appearance of shotguns throughout the trilogy, unlike the magically invented wraith. Like the scimitar, it's been there since the beginning.

Seventh, the M-23 Katana has a bigger clip.

Eighth, both weapons are perfectly viable on gold.

"Ninth, the Katana's M is over twice the Wraith's. QED

Any questions?

Katana is a lot better than what most people think.

EDIT: Ohh, wait, I was thinking about Mortal Kombat

Katana has a cooler sound when fired.

This is my fault. Operating Wookie had the pleasure of grouping with my Katana-wielding Kroguard last night. I'm afraid my stellar performance led him to conclude that the Katana itself was the key to my dominance.

Oddly enough, this is actually one of the reasons the Katana is still one of my favorite shotguns.  Yea, it has pretty poor damage, I really, REALLY wish it's damage had been buffed about 20% to keep pace with where the game ended up before they ended balance changes, but even so, the fact that it's actually lore-consistent is one of the reasons I still like it even after having a maxed manifest.

That and when you install the smart choke the shotgun become gloss black which matches my Human Soldier's gloss black armor and it just looks awesome.

And the Katana has the coolest uncollapsing sound.  If you've never noticed, try it out when it's quiet and listen.  And it's firing sound is one of the better ones too.

It's definitely usable, but it's definitely underpowered too.

In actuality, the shotguns in the Mass Effect universe shouldn't have that much variance in performance from one model to the next. They're all shotguns that function basically the same with the exception of fire rates, they all shoot loads of 8 pieces of shot, with the exception of the Geth Plasma, Crusader, Graal (which isn't strictly speaking a shotgun), and they all presumably function basically the same internally. There's not much reason why they would have wildly different levels of damage really.

They fire tiny pieces of metal, but the size of the pieces change, The claymore would fire projectiles 5x the size of the scimitar (still grains of sand, but bigger grains), and because it's larger likly has more mass accelerators, meaning greater velocity/mass ratio, and more damage

I used to like the Katana, back when it weighed the same as the scimitar and eviscerator and my wraith was too low level to be lightweight.

Now that the two weigh the same, lolno.

Edit: Oh yeah, this was also before the Disciple got buffed to the point where the Katana literally has no purpose whatsoever.

I'll keep this in mind the next time I use the Katana to prop up my coffee table.

Actually, the disciple will fire faster than the katana, and delivers 15% more damage per shot, while weighing only 55% as much. I love the underrated disciple. With the smart choke, it is accurate to mid range.

Katana is great yeah....

.... in ME2.

Such a shame - all four shotguns were so well balanced then (not the GPS of course), and now three of them are awful - katana, scimitar and evi. What happened to those once great weapons... :/

But the Katana is named after a kick-ass sword that cuts through people and doesn't afraid of anything.  Disciples are just a bunch of guys from the Bible, and they didn't cut through anybody.  Ergo, Katana.

You forgot the most important reason:

Katana starts with K, Wraith starts with W. K goes before W.

I tried to make the Katana work after a long time. Same with Scimitar. Can anyone think of a kit or reason where you'd want to take Katana or Scimitar over Piranha (or Wraith for slightly more accuracy)?
