...will I be able to import a character from ME1 into ME2/3? That might sound silly but the original Mass Effect was originally a 360 exclusive, so when the second game came out on the PS3, there was no option to import a ME1 character I imagine and I do not know if in the trilogy release ME2/3 were straight ports or if they were altered to allow a character transfer from the first game.

You are able to do a full trilogy run on the PS3, so no worries there, Import away.

Proud owner of Trilogy Pack and yes you can.

Though ME1 on PS3 has a few frustrating glitches and some game freezing bugs.

There's an update for ME2 allowing you to import ME1 files. ME2 on PS3 does contain those parts you could only experience when importing an ME1 save file, from the very beginning, perhaps they knew they would be porting ME1 to the PS3 eventually.

ME1 does run marginally better on PS3 than on 360, there's a Digital Foundry comparison if you're interested.

I recommend you consider the trilogy on PC. That will give you the option of loading the MEHEM mod for ME3 if you wish. The drawbacks are lack of controller support for 1 and 2 (but I think 3 is OK), and the requirement of an Origin account.

It'll work fine, you just need to download the latest patch for ME2 and you're all set. It'll enable the import option so that "Import ME1 Character" will be available when you start a new game in ME2.

I too own the Trilogy pack on PS3. Was damned hard to find a copy find after it's initial launch. Almost everywhere had sold out. And like everyone else in the thread has said yes, it does carry over to ME2. Which in turn unlocks the content you couldn't get before, like Conrad Verner.

However ME1 on PS3 is bugged to all hell! Loading times are longer, some audio is skipped over entirely (Sovereign's defeat was completely muted for me) and playing as a War Hero I did the Toombs mission and the Sole Survivor dialogue came up.

I do not recommend it. Stick with PC or 360.

I have it too and have had very few bugs , the only one that I can think of is if I play for too long( 5 or more hours) it does freeze . But with the auto save on you should be safe . Everything in the rest of the trilogy is unlocked depending on your actions in ME1 .

I have the entire trilogy on PS3, and the only persistent bug that kind of annoys me is an audio problem in ME2. A character will speak a line, and the last syllable is cut off. I find this happens more when the game's been on a while. Overall, it's a pretty smooth experience for me. I haven't had any issues with ME1 or 3 though, except for some frame rate issues after prolonged play, but that's quite a few hours in when it happens.

The ugliest ME1 PS3 bugs I had were on the Moon. My squadmates would leave my newbie self soloing and I would freak out. And when playing with FemShep, she went mute a couple of times. But that was it.

The only time I've experienced the left-behind bug was on Feros in ME1, when going through the tunnels.

Really?

From my experience the game plays a lot worse on the PS3. The loading times are just painful and watching Shepard's hair textures pop into existance is something I never experienced on the 360, despite the pop-in in other places.

Would love to try it for the PC one day, but more for the user interface, hotkeys and therefore fluid gameplay.

To quote the conclusion of the aforementioned article:
"...texture pop-in has been minimised hugely thanks to the install,
frame-rates have been improved
for cut-scenes, and there's now
absolutely no screen-tearing throughout. There are a few design choices
that may be preferable to some players as well, such as the reduced
intensity of the bloom, and also the minimised film grain filter that
characterises the game's 50s sci-fi aesthetic.

It's not a perfect transition though. Negatives points such as the
lower-resolution normal maps may pass many players by, especially
without an alternative image to compare it to. However, the use of
flickering PCF shadows on character faces stick out even more than the
360's dithered approach, and produces sharp bands of shade across
enclosed environments too. It's also a shame to see the PS3 can't break
away from the incessant 15FPS feedback around Chora's Den or Noveria's
wintry cliff-sides. In this respect, it's only marginally improved over
the 360 in the performance stakes...."

Wow! My experience has been completely different. The loading times and texture pop-in is far worse for me on the PS3 version of the game than on the 360 one.

Simply travelling from the Embassy to The Consort by the quick travel terminals, the PS3 version is almost painful to behold.

Yeah the PS3 looks a little crisper when it is fully loaded but getting to that point isn't worth the extra time it takes to get there.

I own the trilogy on PS3, 360 and PC. The PS3 version of Mass Effect 1 is definitely the worst of the three incarnations.

Edit: Bear in mind that I am also playing Mass Effect 1 while it is installed to my 360's hard drive.

Me too, had it installed onto the HDD/SSD hybrid in my PS3 and it was very smooth.

I have the disc version of ME1 from the Trilogy, haven't had any issues other than a freeze near the end of my first playthrough. I haven't really noticed any texture pop-in but then again I have autosave enabled so everything has probably already loaded in by the time the autosave is finished.

Looking at all this praise for the PS3 port is making me wonder what the hell happened to my copy? Could it be a PAL/NTSC thing perhaps? Or the PSN and hard discs versions?

Same here, I genuinely don't get it.

Mine is a PAL UK disc copy.

I downloaded ME 1 on the PS3, it seems identical to the 360 version to me however I am not yet at the Citadel. But I recall seeing a clear difference in quality for ME3 where the 360 version had better shading, more detailed textures and a higher frame rate.

It makes me wonder, because developers have expressed their opinions that the PS3 is harder to develop for, let's look at the Skyrim expansions for example, and I think it would be unfair to dismiss situations like that as developers being "lazy" without working in the industry.

However, developers are now saying that the PS4 is very easy to develop for, so that might prove to be the best ME experience of next gen.

Edge of Reality did a post last year on Bioware's blog that briefly talked about how they went about porting ME1 to the PS3. I did find it strange that ME3 had framerate issues at times on the PS3 when ME2 didn't and ran a lot better in general.

The only thing that keeps me from re-buying the trilogy on PS3 or PC (I have it and all the DLC on 360) is the $200 or more it would cost to get all the DLC for every game again. It's not like it's a different experience on other systems. It's not the difference between a next-gen console and a current gen one, like for example Battlefield 4 or Watch Dogs will be this fall. No point IMO. But hey, it's your money.

This is because ME3 uses a different engine than ME2, which the PS3 does not have enough memory to utilize correctly. To minimize the issue, you should restart your PS3 every few hours while playing ME3 (for the multiplayer fixes, see the second link in my sig).

No it doesn't.

All three Mass Effect games, regardless of the platform they are on, use the Unreal Engine 3.

Your suggestion to restart your PS3 every couple of hours is a good one but to be honest people should be taking regular breaks from playing anyway.
