I see a lot of people on the BSN wanting to have multiple races as playable main characters in the next game, I admit, I myself am one of them; however, I understand that with such a diverse character choice at the beginning of the game the cost of VA's would mean cuts in other areas.

Instead I propose the concept of switching characters, through-out the game.
For example, the main character of the next game is doing his thing wherever in the galaxy, it's really important etc. but at the same time a squadmate in the game, who has been sent to a different planet/location for other important reasons is then also playable.
So essentially there would be your main character, akin to Shepard, and you'd be going through your mission, you finish this and then you're playing as your squadmate in some other location.

This could be taken even further! What if, for example you switch between character's and their missions during the same time period and failed or successful actions have an impact on the other mission when the game switches perspective again, this would also help keep pacing.

Plus it would make for some really exciting, intense gameplay.
Um, I hope I made my point clear, could use a bit of refining

No such thing as too much GTA V,but you're right, stick to playing as one character.

And how does this reuse the VA workload? If you want the player to be able to choose species for their protagonist then you will have to record multiple versions of each line regardless of what extra complexity you can dream up.

It sounds like a pain in the ass, for sure.

I was under the impression they were doing that for DAI though (actually, I don't know. It seems like people on that board section talk as if they're going to be playing as Qunari though).

What i think he means, is that instead of freely switching between characters akin to GTA V, you take on the role of a squadmate for certain missions. Much like we take control of joker when the collectors attack the normandy.

How about being able to control your squad mates similar to Star Wars KOTOR & Dragon Age

That has nothing to do with anything - the question is how to deal with character customisation, and its impact on gameplay.
I don't know about KOTOR, but Dragon Age solved that problem (of requiring different voice acting for humans, dwarfs and elves) by not voicing any of the Warden's dialogue. SWTOR comes fairly close to what you are suggesting but at the cost of having one VA for all the various species... problem is just that in ME, the various species have rather distinct voices so that won't really work.

The real solution is to have several species, one voice actor for each gender and VOICE FILTERS.

Other games did it and worked okay. I want to CUSTOMIZE MY OWN CHARACTER SPECIES!! They have plenty of money, cuts are nothing.

No, just...no

With that "solution" you remove the character customization altogether, so no do not want

Well, that's going to work to an extent but different species have been established to have different mannerisms, patterns of speech and so on - I'm not an expert, but I somewhat doubt that you could get the quarian accent via a simple filter; it might be cheaper than hiring a different VA for each species but it's not going to as cheap you are suggesting.

Just curious, which other games had fully voiced characters with multiple different races with different dialects (Quarians), pace of speech (Salarian, Turians) and special effects (Drells)? And I'm of course speaking about games with huge amount of text, not just few senteces and screams during fights.

GTA and the old Socom games that all I know of really. Playing other characters and your own personally character would be cool too. I want to play other species like Asari, Turian etc..

just being able to play as another race in an single player would be an large undertaking in-itself for bio-ware, and i think switching characters quickly makes the story less impactful and less engaging.

The funny thing is that if BioWare went this route, this would no doubt be one of the first things everyone blames if the game has any lapses in quality in other respects. Heck there are some who already place blame on the fact that there's both a male and female VA for the main character for quality issues they feel are present (I consider this to be idiotic myself, but this has happened nonetheless).

Did you actually play the game? There are two VA (male/female) per class and that's it: Female Trooper is voiced by Hale regardless of whether she's human or one of the huge variety of aliens, etc.

Nope, only two VA per class, not per race.

In ME it have to be 2 VA for human + asari, another for salarian (fast talk), another for turian (they're speaking slower then other races) and other voice work with special effects for quarians, krogans, drells....

Is there other games with such exctensive voice work with for customable main character as Zakuspec claimed?

There's no such thing as a "quarian" accent. You have Tali who sounds east european, Gerrel who sounds english, Kal who sounds american, etc...

Han and Kal are more the exceptions if anything, because every other quarian we meet throughout the series, even the nameless ones we only meet once, have accents similar to Tali's. But anyway, aside from the accents, there's also the use of quarian words mixed in with English that also set them apart.

The GTA V model, while awesome within its context, would not work for more blank-slate characters like Shepard. One thing is that dialogue and characters in GTA doesn't have options like in Mass Effect. In combat, like Dragon Age, could be nice though if they balance the game as if the squaddies weren't nerfed (like in the ME2/3 at least.

They could allow more customization of alien characters in MP, and use those features in SP for NPC variation (face-morph for instance) and consistency. While impossible with the current gen consoles, the next ones has the juice to make it run.

Saint's Row offers that (to the extent that the "demo" is a character creator) and is a console game.
