Anyone else agree that pausing the game is useless at weaker difficulties, same with the tactical camera. I would use it on nightmare, but on normal, it's just a waste of time.
I sort of agree. Most of my pauses are for AoE targeting, and if friendly fire's off I don't need to bother.

In most fights, a fairly good player probably won't "need" to pause if they've set the party up with good tactics and have given the party members a fairly robust health/defence balance, or slotted in the "pop potions at the first sign of depletion" approach.
There's the occasional fight when things get out of hand, or the shape of the environment puts people in odd places, and a few boss fights where things can go from great to disaster in a matter of moments and unless your main character is set up to solo things it can be hard to recover from that (I'm looking at you, Harvester, trying to bring you down with only my healer-PC still standing). But even if I don't "need" to pause, there are still points when I might choose to, if I don't want party members to die, or to burn health potions or just because, dammit.
But that's me; someone who has played a rather scary number of RPGs (including the full Bioware set) and MMOs. Normal difficulty is not usually balanced with someone like me in mind...which is why we have Hard and Nightmare, right?
I have a friend who paused her way through the entire Origin story's combat in DA:O, with me having to sit on my hands and bite my tongue to resist the urge to say "Seriously, they're no threat. Stop panicking - you'll probably enjoy the combat more if you let it flow". Because that 's how I play, not how she plays, and she fell deeply in love with DA:O, despite having a general disinterest in RPGs. Last thing I'm going to do is judge her (or anyone) for doing that with liberal use of the pause button and selecting a lower difficulty setting.

Yes, Shale was on the list.AlanC9 wrote...
I don't like the "favorite party composition" question. That's different for every PC, and in any event I cycle all the available party members in and out. I went with Alistair/Morrigan/ Leliana, mostly because I think Alistair's a shlightly better tank than Shale (is she even on the list?), and Morrigan and Leliana have the least damage done to their leveliing before I get them
That was a hard question for me. I usually have very clear favorites, but that wasn't the case in DAO, and I choose party composition based on their personalities instead of combat skill. I just went with a combination of which characters I found most interesting and the ones I used most in all my playthroughs. The result was Morrigan, Sten, and the mabari warhound.

Why?
You can just let the game play itself to win on casual.

Ideally i would not like to have to pause and play the game more like a flight simulator where you can only give short orders to your wing men.
In DA:0 pause was useful and even though after a while you could play without pausing most of the time even in nightmare (but nightmare was not that much of step difficulty wise). Still pause was very useful to tell companions where to go and for the timing of the area attacks or cone of cold.
In DA:2, pausing was relatively pointless and so where tactics, the main char could mince his way through anything even in nightmare. Tactic for companion only really mattered to keep boss fight. within a reasonable time frame.

But some of us enjoy the combat in and of itself, not just as a means to victory. We like to play the combat, even if we don't need to.

If someone likes the combat I really don't understand why they would play on casual/easy. It's too fast and not fun.

Could just boil down to differences between you and that person, then.

You don't need to deal with the tedious difficulty enhancers like bloated HP and immunities. The AI between Nightmare and casual is largely the same.

Allan, where is the Loghain option for my preferred DAO party?

I chose Alistair, Leliana, and Shale. I don't actually take Shale in the party all that much, but I couldn't not select her, pigeons be damned. I should have picked her for all three slots (I'm kind of upset now that I didn't try).AlanC9 wrote...

DA2 was really disappointing since I had to leave Carver out (I do take him on nearly every single quest in Act 1, but if I picked him, I'd have to leave off Aveline). Carver's still better than Aveline, but she's in the party more overall.
I liked the ability to show my complete lack of interest in the tactical perspective. I was also legitimately surprised when I had to check every single option on the pause-and-play list.

Can you put this on sticky for a while? This survey is official (Wait... This is official, right?), the more people who answer it, the better.

I don't have much time these days, so I've played DA2 on casual but it was too boring, for me.
There is no ff, the enemies won't even try to steal your potions...

Even if I don't need it, It's a feature I enjoy because some fights require me to set my party, and sometimes I have to (re)activate sustains etc.
As for settings, I always do a first run in casual or normal if casual is to easy, because I want to enjoy the whole experience - story and combat - with out really having to stop and re-do a fight because I died. Afterwards all subsequent playthroughs are done on Hard

I'm in the same boat. I'm hardly a tactician, but it makes it a lot easier to handle the more intense battles. It's pretty much for every fight. It's not that I'd be dead without it for every fight, but it removes the stress level for me while still keeping a sense of challenge.I love using pause. On Normal, I use it liberally and doing so makes the game more enjoyable for me.
I give my teammates basic healing tactics and the rest I like to micromanage.

It's a fun micro-managing tool, even in times when you don't actually need to micro-manage. And in those times, I just unpause!
