If that's true - I would shake my head.
At this point, I gotta believe the marketing dept is more "in tune" than that.
Hopefully it comes out why this survey is being conducted.

Have you ever worked with marketing people?

This is exactly what they're like.

Hey Sylvius,
Oh I know a thing or two in the marketing dept.
And yeah, they sure can be like that.
Thing is this is the third installment - not a new franchise, and the game dev is well on it's way.
Ergo, the reason for my "head shaking" if the speculation is true.

Why?
You can just let the game play itself to win on casual.

And if your sole objective is to win, then that matters.

But some of us enjoy the combat in and of itself, not just as a means to victory.  We like to play the combat, even if we don't need to.

Pretty much this. Do I play on casual? Most of the time, yes. But that doesn't mean I don't like the combat.  And it doesn't mean I haven't played on higher difficulties.  I don't play the game to win, personally. I play it because I like the story and characters, and I think it's fun to fling lightening at people.

Agreed.

I play on Casual as well, but I also finished all Mass Effects on Insanity and stuff. The reason I typically play on Casual is because I prefer it, period. Unless there is a specific reward for finishing the game on a higher difficulty, I am unlikely to switch to a higher difficulty and unnecessarily frustrate myself. I don't really play Dragon Age for the 'challenge' anyway; I play it to experience it. Thus, Casual is exactly what works for me.

That's cool to play Casual if you like the story and just want to slug through combat. But no one can take you down, you don't have to think, just let your partner a.i do all the work. As much as I love Bioware narratives, they also have a strong in depth game-play system that I like to enjoy to the fullest

Filled out survey.

Only story quality I listed as "not important at all" was the Dark and Gritty aspect.

Also, saw question for favorite class in DAO, but not one for DA2

I'm not sure I entirely understand what the issue is.  Whether it's the first game, the third game, or the twelfth game, the marketing department is always going to try to determine the best way to market the product (sometimes more successfully than others).  And given the frequent criticism of DA2's marketing campaign, I imagine they're keen on trying extra hard to get it right.  The timing doesn't seem odd to me, either.  They may be well into development, but if the survey is in fact being used for marketing purposes, it will likely have little to no effect on actual content.  The game is also still a year away, which is plenty of time for them to gear up to the big marketing splash that will happen closer to that time.

The issue is:  at what point should a studio, and it various depts, understand WHO their target audience groups are and what each of their triggers are for buying and enjoying the game.
But I will cut myself short from elaborating for **** reasons.
This is getting too far off topic.
Last word belongs to whomever on this subject.
I wish nothing but best success for DAI, and Better yet for me - continuity of this awesome franchise!
If this survey assists at this point, well all the power to it.
Cheers!

So when are we going to see a survey about dialogue, story and characterisation preferences?

Hm. It didn't cover my favourite part of RPGs. Namely, endlessly tweaking and researching my character until I end up with the best possible build. :P

I did the survey yesterday, but reading here I am starting to wonder if I have interpreted the questions in the right way... For example, for the 'epic storyline' I interpreted that as 'good, strong story' and not as 'classic hero story'... I guess some explanation could have been useful here and there...

I felt some of the questions were a little odd, given the context of the rest of the survey.

For instance "do you value an epic storyline" or "do you want in-depth character relationships/romances" didn't seem to fit the rest of the survey, which asked about pause and play features or your favorite combat class.

Also... I'm actually a little surprised this survey is coming out now. I would be of the mind that a lot of these things would have already been decided upon a year before release?

Marketing information. They're still looking into how much emphasis they should put on different elements for marketing.

The majority of people only play the game once.

Better wording is defintely needed for the majority of the survey. While marketing people do create a ton of surveys in my experience they have no idea how to word things properly. Then again all of Bioware's games besides DA2 had an "epic storyline" so I suppose they could have incorrectly assumed that the people that play Bioware games would know what they meant, but even that is bad survey making.

It doesn't matter what you think 'epic storyline' is, only whether it's important to you or not.

I imagine that if the survey makers had the vision of an epic storyline involving rainbows and happiness, and the survey takers do not understand the meaning and check "Very important". This would lead to the games "epic story" involving a lot of happiness and rainbows, and the fans raging about how that isn't an "epic storyline".

Which is why you need short explanations on what is actually being sought after with the survey, or you end up getting completly useless data.

I don't like the "favorite party composition" question. That's different for every PC, and in any event I cycle all the available party members in and out. I went with Alistair/Morrigan/ Leliana, mostly because I think Alistair's a shlightly better tank than Shale (is she even on the list?), and Morrigan and Leliana have the least damage done to their leveliing before I get them

I know!  I especially had a hard time with that one for DA2.  When playing as a rogue I always brought Fenris, Aveline and Anders with me.  But I actually hate having Fenris and Anders in a party together because then I have to listen to them argue.  I'd much rather have Isabella or Varric in there for fun.  So the party I used the most, can't accurately be described as my "favorite."

You're assuming that this survey will change the *actual story.* That's not what a marketing survey does.

I'll give you an example:
Men like attractive women.
Beer manufacturers want to appeal to men.
Marketing puts attractive women in their beer commercials.

This has nothing to do with the *actual beer.*

Gamers like 'epic storylines.'
Game publishers want to appeal to gamers.
Marketing puts 'this is an epic storyline!' in their advertizing.

This has nothing to do with the *actual story.*

Good survey. This is what I put for further comments.

I would like my Mages and archers to be able to avoid or work their way out of melee range automatically rather than have to stop and move them out of danger. It would be good if they could kite mobs that continue to follow them.

I didn't answer that as I play on a PC.
