No. It's a tool for pros, a ProTool. Only noobs call it a crutch, cos' they can't use it right. End of story.

But seriously, unless you're only using it mostly to shoot through walls with your Crusader/Executioner/Typhoon etc, then you are using it like a crutch IMO.

Wait, are you saying that if you use it for wallhacking, then it's not a crutch, but if you use it just for extra situational awareness, then it is? That seems backwards to me.

What is a crutch?

A crutch is a tool used by people with leg/foot injury to help them walk around. It doesn't enable them to do something they are normally incapable of. It simply lets them walk with a lot less difficulty and pain during a time of temporary setback.

The thing about crutches is that you're supposed to be able to function without them. A crutch isn't a walking cane or a wheelchair. You're supposed to eventually heal up and stop using them when they're no longer necessary. They're like training wheels on a bike; they make things easier but if you can't ride without them, then you can't really say you've learned to ride a bike.

Wallbanging through 3 metres of solid wall is plain impractical without some method of seeing through said wall. Using Geth Scanner in this manner isn't using it like a crutch. It's using it like... a wingsuit or scuba diving gear. It's enabling you to do something that would in all likelihood be a terrible idea without it.

Acordig to BSN, anything more than a lvl 1 kit with no allocated points and a predator 1 with no upgrades - is a crutch

That depends on your definition of a crutch. It certainly makes the game easier, but so does using a gun.

Just consider if you or your build is the one that benefits more from it. Don't just slap it on everything, you'll hurt your eyes.

So, if I play with it, I'll go blind?

No, wait.  Don't answer that.....

Predator I?

Nope. Real pros use Shuriken I or Avenger I.

Whenever you have a successful match, your kit, build, weapons, mods, and gear all count as crutches :P

I find nothing wrong with improved situational awareness. The AI uses it to "peek" at where you are. Players have the same potential if they choose. My Slayer definitely wants it equipped for his urban warfare.

What does "a crutch" really mean? That it gives you an advantage? Too much of an advantage? I have no idea.

None of the guys who claim X is a crutch have an idea what it means, since they redefine the term crutch on a daily base, so why worry about that nonsense?

We have seen missile glitchers fail, so we surely can assume that about any kit can have a glaring weakness left to be compensated by the player.

I hope it won't make a return in ME4, as well as hunter mode in its current form...

Many games have wall hacks now, people like it. Take Batman Arkham series as an example, the developers said players spent more time in Detective Mode than they did in the Normal Mode.

A less perfect wall hack or scan would have been more balanced. Either have the scan cycle, or be blurry or faint. Or have its wall hack component be reduced so that it works better vs cloaked or smoked enemies.

I really like that idea (scan cycle or pulse).

I use one pretty consistently and couldn't care less if people see it as a crutch or not.

I enjoy fighting the enemy in the game, and it accelerates my ability to find where the enemy is at so I can engage them.

Not quite.  A pulse that repeats.  So Geth Scanner would still have the same capability, but instead of a continuous vision that reveals enemies, they would only appear in intervals as a pulse was sent out every second or two for example.

Like low-level Splinter Cell's sonar goggles, and if you move everything begin to blur, and you don't understand a thing xD

I don't see why it's especially crutchy considering that Hunter Mode exists, and if you take four ranks in Fitness or put on a Cyclonic Modulator Hunter Mode does the same thing with no disadvantage, in addition to boosting weapon, melee and power damage, movement speed, weapon accuracy or power recharge, weapon ROF or power damage, and even more movement speed or more global damage boost.

Compare this to Geth Scanner, which only provides the visual overlay and none of the other benefits, several of which (weapon ROF, movement speed, global damage buff) are among the most desirable in the game.

I also assume we don't think Hunter Mode is a crutch on, for instance, Geth Engineer.

My assessment is that Geth Scanner is just a long-overdue way of giving all classes an enormous advantage that the Geth classes have always had. Incidentally, I don't use it all that much myself because figuring out where enemies are in this game is so damn easy if you keep tabs on where your teammates are relative to the possible places enemies can spawn on a given map.

I love the geth scanner, and it's pretty much vital if I'm playing with the sound off.

I don't think it should be since you're sacrificing equipment for tactical bonuses. I mean, the GS does what your eyes do, except it has x-ray and it doesn't prevent you from getting flanked. I don't use it, I prefer a boost to my gear, since my senses are pretty well attuned to enemy locations. Comes from playing a lot of L4D.

No. The only crutch this game has is playing on PC. There you don't have to deal with crappy aim-assist.

Hunter mode is a unique, race-specific ability.  And it makes sense lore-wise.

So does the possibility that Daro'Xen and her merry band of techno-geeks found a way to bring us the scanning technology of tomorrow...today!

It's as much of a crutch as firing your gun or using your power.
