I'm in the mood to take up another PC RPG and could use some suggestions. I figured I'd post here as the BG series (and Torment) are the games by which I judge all others. To give you an idea for what I am looking, here's a list of games I've played.
BG series (obviously) - The one thing I didn't like about it, and what kept me from finishing the game, was the gameplay later in BG2. I thought the metamagic and HLAs were over the top and totally broke immersion for me. I really wish I could finish this game, but sometime after Spellhold, I just get sick of it all.
Planescape Torment - Incredible story, great characters. I liked the gameplay, though a lot of it (i.e. combat) ended up being rather unnecessary.
IWD series - I like the gameplay for both of these better than BG. No chain contingency spellstrike/breach/blah blah blah. No GWWs. It was more traditional fantasy combat. However, it was a dungeon crawl, so I didn't get attached to the story or any characters.
Arcanum - I played this a long time ago. The story and setting were great. Pretty original. The gameplay was a little wonky at times, but I didn't mind so much.
TOEE - I liked the gameplay, but being a dungeon crawl, I quickly grew bored of the story.
DAO - I played the first one, but gave up on it pretty quick. It looked promising in terms of plot and characters, but the command programming for allies never worked properly for me. As a result, I'd spend a lot of fights watching allies doing things I specifically didn't want them to do.
Neverwinter Nights - The first one was ok. The gameplay was an interesting change from the BG games. I tried the second one, but the setting and characters seemed much too trite for me.
Diablo and the like - I liked the back story, but being a hack and slash, I didn't feel too engaged. It was mostly a button masher to me.
Fallout Series - 1 and 2 were brilliant. I even enjoyed the gameplay of Tactics. FO3 was meh with it's story, and they totally nerfed the SPECIAL and skill system. FONV improved gameplay, but I absolutely hated the story for a variety of reasons.
Elder Scrolls Oblivion - Gameplay was just ok. Sure, your equipment grew stronger, as did your spells, but so did everything else. It was all pretty same-y once you saw past that. Also, the world itself seemed a little generic.
Mass Effect - Looked interesting, but wouldn't run properly on my system. I only did the first mission, and it was sluggish, so I gave up.
The Witcher - I hear it's great and played a bit past the intro at a friend's, as I was thinking of getting it myself. However, it just didn't draw me in.
System Shock 2 - Brilliant game, more of a FPS than an RPG, but the story was great and gameplay was fun for the genre.
I'm sure I've played more, but I think you get the gist of it here. I don't really care how old the game is, as long as the plot and characters are great, and the gameplay is engaging. So, any suggestions? Thanks.
Games like BG?

At the risk of annoying the moderators (this forum being for BG discussion) I'll mention Master of Magic as a possibility. Unlike BG that's not an RPG, but from your descriptions the game play would be varied enough for you to be interesting without suffering from the increased power / complication at high levels that annoys you about BG.

Do they have to be AD&D type of games. I stick to BG but Mech Commander always struck me as tech comparison and I played it through several times. The command interface was remarkably similar to BG in terms of party selection and way points.
There was a pool of "pilots" who gain skills as you complete missions. You could select which mechs to take on each mission and equip them in different ways such as short, medium, long range weapons, add extra armour, etc. There were also options to attack a target as a specific range or with lasers etc. so you could save limited shot weapons (missiles and the like) for critical targets.
Not sure how easy it is to find nowadays.

Knights of the Old Republic? Eye of the Beholder series? (though those are kind of dungeon crawly).. If you can go old school the Dungeon Master series (again crawly), really old school the SSI gold box games.

It doesn't have to be AD&D. It doesn't even have to be fantasy. I thought Fallout was brilliant. The first couple games I would say were on par with BG.
I'm familiar with Mech Commander, but that seemed more like an RTS game to me. Plot and characters are important to me. I'd rather leave the fantasy genre than leave behind plot and character.
And MoM? I played the hell out of that game back in the day. Once again, though, that's less RPG and more strategy, and there's no real plot or characters.
I'll look into KOTOR. I'm sure I played it back in the day, but I don't remember a thing about it.
Keep 'em coming. I recently heard about Project:Eternity, to which I'm looking forward, but that's not coming out until at least late 2014. I need something to occupy myself until then.

I recommend giving Mask of the Betrayer for Neverwinter Nights 2 a shot, that campaign was the high point of the Neverwinter Nights series. The Knights of the Old Republic games are also good, and they have the same style of real time with pause party based tactical combat as the Baldur's Gate games and Dragon Age: Origins.
You're not alone here. I know that a lot of people liked it and considered it the best thing to happen to CRPGs in years when it came out, but I was only ever able to get to chapter three, and even then I had to force myself to get that far.

Might try Dungeon Siege - very linear, certainly a 'dungeon crawler', but it has a fairly rich story (I'd start with 1, though).
I'd also echo KotOR. Great game, even for the age - and if that's an issue, I'd try out tOR (MMO); free to play nowadays, though not nearly as immersive imho.
I'd also maybe try a game i just found called Nox - looks like a combination of BG and Diablo, but I haven't had a chance to play it yet.
Edit: As you seem to like Bethesda games, but havn't tryied ES5: Skyrim, I'd suggest that - blows Oblivion out of the water, imho.
Edit2:Also, since you enjoyed System Shock 2 so much, I'd suggest the Deus Ex series (particularly #1) - another FPS, but an incredibly rich story. Several here will likely say BG is the best game ever, and it's definitely in my top5, but SS2 and DX1 are probably tied for my top spot.

I have played DX. It was amazing. Good stealth action, great story. It's too bad the series crapped out after the first game. Though, to be fair, I didn't play the third. However, I read about it and it looks like it turned out more like 2 than 1.
I can't run Skyrim on my machine now. And, do I like Bethesda games? I didn't like Oblivion, was lukewarm to FO3, and absolutely hated the story in FONV.
