That is an honest question and I’d really like an answer. I came here to make a thread asking if anyone knew if we would have the option to make an Amell inquisitor, and after a search came across all this anti-Amell hate that seems to come out of nowhere. I’m confused, and would greatly appreciate some clarification. My understanding is that a mary sue is prefect and infallible, and I honestly never got that from any of the Amells in the games.

If the –optional- Amell warden was a mary sue than s/he wouldn’t have failed to help Lily run off with the love of her life. And if Hawke was a mary sue than s/he would have been able to save their mother and keep her from becoming a zombie. And as far as the infallible part….well my Hawke was a complete jackass, and my Warden was a womanizer.

Seriously, I just plain don’t get it.

P.S.

Saying they are mary sues for being the hero of the two games is a flawed argument considering that…

A; one of the biggest complaints about DA2 was the lack of actual “heroics.”

and...

B; Considering that nearly everything horrible that happened in DA2 that set the stage for World War Whatever in DAI was basically all Hawke’s fault, I really don’t think “mary sue hero” is a term I would use to describe him/her. I’d go with “**** up on a biblical scale.”

Do a search for Amell and look at the treads asking about an Amell player character in DAI. There is a lot of hatered there.

I don't get it either. Most often, it's brought on by people who say "We've had Amells in two games already! Why add a third!?!" To which I say, "What's the big deal?"

Agreed, I don't recall anyone complaining about Commander Shepard carrying three games, and that was all the same guy. And its still a far cry from the Skywalker clan, who has carried six movies and God know's how many books and video games.

The Term Mary-sue has been so used and abused both here and in general people have lost the plot as to its true meaning, as you say.

It seems to stem from a feeling that the other origins haven't gotten as much attention as the Amells, So people are resentful of any further Amell development. Or thats how it seems to me.

The Amell family doesn`t bother me one bit. Didn`t like being forced to play one in DA2 though. Still. kudos to Bioware for trying something different.

But you play Shepard throughout the whole series, not his/her cousins. :P Kind of silly, every time something major happens, an Amell is at the center? Sounds like one of those dumb ancient prophecy plots.

I haven't seen hate. I have seen people saying they don't want DA to become the Amell Epic. Two games is a coincedence. Three games is a pattern. It's a sentiment I share.

And I haven't seen anyone use the Mary Sue descriptor either but they're using it wrong.

I think most people recognize the Amell connection for what it was- what David Gaider specifically said it was-; an easter egg. Didn't have any real meaning behind it, just a nice little bonus for DA2 players who played a mage warden in Origins.

Welcome to the world of fantasy storytelling, where every protagonist and their families are Mary Sues.

OP I don't think you know the meaning of 'Mary Sue', here's some info on it: adventuresofcomicbookgirl.tumblr.com/post/13913540194/mary-sue-what-are-you-or-why-the-concept-of-sue-is

A Mary Sue is not just a perfect character.

It's a contrived and narratively dishonest perfect character. Which makes all the difference in the world.

Perfect characters (who aren't at all Mary Sues) are really quite common in fiction.

Who would you consider to be perfect character in Dragon Age?

I haven't played it, so I can't say. Be aware that just because perfect characters are common doesn't mean that every story necessarily has one.

You sure post a lot of stuff about Dragon Age for someone who's never played it.

Are there any characters in other Bioware games that you consider perfect?

Yes. Many characters in Mass Effect. Shepard, Liara, Tali, Garrus, EDI, and Jack in ME 3. Maybe Joker as well.

So what exactly is your working definition for perfect here?

A character who has achieved the ideal of what a person can be. It's not a complicated list. Competence. Self-Honesty. Compassion. Courage. Beauty. Intelligence.

Shepard? Jack? Liara?

I just can't take you seriously.

And beauty is a part of perfect charactership? One has to be beautiful to be perfect?
