I think relationships should go the whole mile in game, and you should marry your LI (assuming you can LI). I know it sounds kind of silly, but maybe they work it into the story better than I could explain it. It's cool that the Inquisitor can be a self proclaimed badass and do things that legends are made of, like forming your own organization and saving the world, but what keeps them grounded? What's their rock? If marriage to a LI is to much then perhaps marriage to a NPC who isn't involved directly with your organization, a spouse you left at home?
Maybe they interact with you in other ways, like sending you letters that you can read back at the base?
Maybe they move from base to base which ever one you spend the most time at, or you can move them yourself from base to base. Maybe if a base falls under enemy occupation you could lose them, (assuming they are NPCs and not important party members), maybe you have to rescue them if they are party members or a npc. Maybe if they get captured more than once they get killed out right.
Of course only if it makes sense to work it into the development of the character, I wouldn't want it forced in or left meaningless like in Skyrim.
I feel the same way.
In my head and heart my Warden stopped the Blight for Leliana (and stop Allistar's crying before she met her) and the chance to be with her. My Hawke saved Kirkwall so she could have a home for her and Isabela. Their first concerns were their love interests.
For me it gave them a personal stake in what was going on around them and makes saving the world "real" for them. Saving the world is great but it's like Mordin said in
ME2 it's hard personalize a whole galaxy or world but can think of family and it becomes easier.
Now chances are there are already those who chime in with the tied old line "DON"T WANT A LIFE SIM!" Well I don't either! I want the PCs to have the option to get
married and start a family and that can be used for dramatic and heartbreaking choices like saving a town or your family. If my Inquisitor can
married and even have kids than make them part of the overall narritive and make me work to keep the marriage together or save my PC's family.
It also makes the game more grounded and gives my character a reason to get up in the morning and keep fighting.
What I dont want to see is marriage treated as a joke like
Skyrim and the
Fable series.
