this. I like romances but marrying seems to do nothing for the story in my eyes. And it isn't the games whole purpose. I like to think of the romances as a plus.

Does anyone remember how Skyrim handled marrage?:P

Yea - the spouses give you money and stuff. :o Just slap on a necklace, talk to your fav cash cow, and make it official with a little ceremony.

"This isn't a dating sim" is a tired argument, and quite frankly, it's just as silly now as it was then, since no one's actually calling for the game to just be romance, romance, romance all the time.

A lot of us happen to enjoy the LI aspect of these games.  We think it adds another dimension of depth to the story and the protagonist's character.  If you don't like it, then don't explore that aspect of the game.  Simple.

By the way, marriages in games like Skyrim worked out just fine and no one had an issue with it.

I never said I was against the romance aspect of a game. I have some playthroughs where I haven't romanced anyone, but most of the time I partake in the romances myself. That being said--this isn't a "Either support romance in games or stand against us." type thing. I can see the benefits of a romance in a game and also see how it can be taken too far. The majority of threads seem to be about fans begging to be able to romance >insert character<, or wanting to have babies or marriage or have special cutscenes where you can show your love in some normal ways and sometimes not so normal ways. People seem more concerned about how they can have a digital romance than they care about game mechanics, gameplay, character development, lore consistency, etc. Which are the things *I* find what makes a game really, really good. Just my opinion, but there it is.

Also, lots of people had issue with Skyrim's marriage--some wanted it to have more meat to it and some (even in this thread) complain how it feels too tacked on. Personally, I liked it. Argis watched my back when I had to throw down, he held all of my junk so that I could loot more. At home, he cooked meals that helped my health, he bought all my junk, gave me gold and I even got a stat benefit for sleeping in our marriage bed. I will take all of those things in place of an awkward, over-the-clothes groping session any day of the week.

Are you people aware that relationships formed in intense times, such as in DAO and ME, rarely survive said times for long? Without the adrenaline rush, those relationships quickly fall into the standard category, and what made them special vanishes, leading to bitterness and eventual separation.

Tell that to Alistair and Leliana.

  • I said "rarely".
  • Those are fictional characters. How much realism you want in your fiction is a matter of taste.
  • When do those relationships, by any definition, become "standard" or "normal"?

Though I agree with pretty much everything you said, and I also believe people give romances way to much importance, wouldn't romance be simply part of the character interaction and developpement portion of the game. That's a pretty big area, and romances are just a small fraction of it.

Well for Alistair I'd reckon when you become King and Queen and considering Leliana's lifestyle a life of travel is normal for her.

For her, sort of, but not for most people. It remains a very "exciting" life.

Maybe the online component will be the ability for other Inquisitors to travel to other players' games and serve as a best man/woman or, hey, even a wedding planner!

Apocalypse weddings never work out. Oh sure, it seems romantic, tying the knot just before the world's about to end. But then doomsday gets averted by some heroic type and you're left thinking "Did I rush into this relationship because we were about to be eaten by demons?"

That's kind of my point normal varies from person to person.

I'd rather the writers focus on a coherent, compelling story, with characters that I actually care about, and leave marriage to fan fiction. Or real life.

And my point is that realtionships formed when adrenaline is rushing and the fear of constant death is hanging over you 24/7 work differently and quite often are mutually exclusive from the settle down, get married and have children sort, since the former is usually unsustainable in the latter's background.

Can I have a polygamous marriage with my dog, cat and the mailbox? If not, no sale.

Sounds like too much grinding would be involved.

Could it be like in the original Fable where you can have multiple spouses, and lead them out to Darkwood and sacrifice them to Skorm... then marry more spouses and sacrifice them too?

Because that would be awesome.

I for one enjoy the romance aspects of Bioware games but this is starting to get out of hand. You get married... next people want an after story bit with you your LI and a baby in your home in a meadow. Where does it end?

BioWare has done that before.

Besides Witch Hunt, there's the Aerie romance from BG2.

I'm a traditional woman and a fan of marriage. I like stories that have marriage and children in them, what's wrong about that? I think the option to marry your LI would be really cool, and if it was only an option then people who don't want marriage wouldn't have to do it.

I think it could fit some stories and some characters.

I mean, I don't really feel that it's something that's been lacking in previous games, but I don't see why it should be ruled out.

Elaborate ceremonies are probably out unless it's main plot related and thus political rather than (purely) romantic, but I a quick ceremony before the big finale wouldn't need to take up more resources than are already allocated towards romances, I wouldn't think.

The problem is, there is only so much time and resources that can be devoted to the game, and marriage seems like an unnecessary feature that adds nothing or very little and can potentially hinder aspects of the story, or not even make sense. Probably DAI will happen throughout a few months, like DAO. Do people often get married having known each other for just months?
