Sort of.

If you fully upgrade the Keep (ie, give the Dwarf who is rebuilding the walls everything he wants, close the deep roads underneath the keep and find lyrium dust for the dwarf who makes explosives - maybe something else, can't quite remember), then you can defend Amaranthine and the Keep should take care of itself.

Kinda.

You still will not be able to return to the Keep between defending Amaranthine and fighting the Mother. But you will get epilogue slides for the companions you left behind explaining that they held the Keep without you.

However, unfortunately the plot flags do not register correctly here. As far as they are concerned, even a fully-upgraded Keep will fall and the companions left behind will die. This is only important in the case of Nathaniel, as he is the only person who may or may not appear in DA2 depending on whether he survived Awakenings.

Hope that made sense.

I saved both.
Stayed in the city and had built up the keep's defenses.
Found out later I had lost Velanna in the battle, but it seemed everyone else survived.

Awakening is pretty buggy anyway, fortunately most of the decisions thereof have little consequences in DA2.

Pretty much, yeah.

However, there is good news. Before DA:I is launched, Bioware will be releasing a programme called Dragon Age Keep. Essentially this will allow players to save, tweak and simply create their saved 'world states' (ie, decisions from previous games) to bring over into DA:I and games thereafter. Hopefully this will iron out bugs and issues with the plot flags, of which there are many.

In the meantime, the only character who needs to actually survive DA:A in order to be imported into DA2 is Nathaniel.

So, in short, if you want to save both Amaranthine and the Keep...

1) Fully upgrade the Keep (pay the dwarf building the walls, find him granite, get all the ore deposits for Wade, close the Deep Roads, and get lyrium dust for the explosives dwarf).
2) Bring Nathaniel with you when you go to defend Amaranthine (ideally make sure the companions that you leave behind at the Keep have their personal quests completed and have a very high approval score of you. Otherwise there is a chance they will die in the seige).
3) Choose to stay and defend the city rather than return to defend the Keep.
4) Import all this into DA2
5) Sit tight and wait for Dragon Age Keep to be released which will hopefully iron out the bugs so the plot flags will correctly reflect your decisions and epilogue slides (ie, everyone lives).

so I can  finish  Awakening and use the  Dragon Age Keep to   iron out the  bugs and fix the  plot flags

Ah, yes there is another bug that makes Sigrun's Roguish Past inaccessible once you accept the Law and Order or Smuggler's Run quests.

There is a mod which fixes this if you are on PC:

For you PC, install the mod.

For your 360 and PS3, I'm afraid you'll just have to remember to do Sigrun's Quest before accepting the Law and Order or Smuggler's Run quests.

And while we're on the subject, do you know that the Silverite Mines (a location in the Wending Woods) is also bugged?

Again, there is a fix:

http://dragonage.nex....com/mods/1762/

But if not on PC, then the problem is this: as soon as you enter the Silverite Mines, you will be captured. If you and your party wake up in peasant clothing then the bug has not fired, and you are fine. But if either you or any of your companions have woken up naked, then the bug has triggered and you will be unable to complete the level. In which case you will need to reload to a save before entering the mines. The bug is triggered by certain gear you wear, so once you have reloaded, try going in again wearing different stuff. Or alternatively, just go in naked.

Basically you will need to remember to save your game just before entering the mines.

This is the biggest and most game-breaking bug in Awakenings. There was outrage on BSN that this was never fixed.

You can complete the Silverite Mines even then. It's just that all your personal gear is lost. When it happened to me, I was able to get all my companions' gear, just not my own. I don't think there's anyone here, or if so not many, that haven't experienced this bug.

I think the first play through I got my gear back, the remainder was in a chest by the Quanri merchant??. I can't remember since it has been a while. I did install the mod for the rest of the plays. Awakening Silverite Mines Bugfix by Terra_Ex
http://dragonage.nex...om/mods/1762//?
~EDITED~ You can only actually "save" one or the other. Make sure you do all the upgrades on the keep. And let it stand.

So how is the best way to get high approval for all of the companions

Firstly, do their personal quests. That's a big lump sum of approval right there.

Secondly, gifts. Preferred gifts count for a lot. Here are there preferred gifts:

http://dragonage.wik...ifts_(Awakening)

Thirdly, conversation. It doesn't count for as much as the other two, but it helps. Follow the link and scroll down to 'Approval/Disapproval Dialogues in Awakenings'

http://dragonage.wik...m/wiki/Approval

It shouldn't be too difficult to get high approval from most of your companions. The hardest ones are Sigrun (because her personal quest is buggy) and Oghren. In yet another delightful bug (seriously, Awakenings is riddled), Oghren's approval from gifts does not work as it should.

Gifts work on a system of diminishing returns. The first preferred gift you give any companion will net a +10 approval. +9 for the second, +8 for the third, etc, down to +5, where each preferred gift from then on will continue to give you +5. However, even though Oghren's approval has been reset to 0 at the start of Awakenings, he still 'remembers' gifts you gave him during Origins, so if you already gave him a gift in Origins, the first one you give him in Awakenings will only get you +9. If you gave him 5 or more gifts in Origins, the first one you give him in Awakenings will only net you +5. I'm sure you get the idea.

It should still be possible to get him to 76% approval (the amount you need to finish his personal quest and get him his best ending) but it's a tight fit. You'll need to give him all his gifts and select all of the best dialogue options for him. If you have any gifts left over from Origins, it is a good idea to give them all to Oghren here. They will still get you approval, though only the base amount (ie, +5 down to +1). You could even give him other people's gifts if you need a little extra boost (note this is not possible in all gifts - see the table on the gift link above).

I guess they'd work - I don't have them myself.

Although, don't you buy them from Bohdan? And thus have to carry them over from an Origins import?

As I recall, feastday items do not carry over (most of the DLC stuff doesn't).

In DAO, yes. In Awakening not that I recall.
