I have BG1 installed from the DVD together with ToTSC, th BGTalesUK5512.exe patch and BG1FixPack11.exe. I chose a custom install with everything selected.

Everything has been working fine until I went to the northern edge of the Freidnly Arm Inn area and try to head north to the farm area. The game autosaves and then displays a screen telling me that I have the wrong disc in drive D and I need to put BG disc 4 in the drive.

Any help on how I can resolve the problem or fix my installation would be much appreciated.

Can you show us the contents of your baldur.ini file? In particular the section headed "Alias" telling the game where to find the 6 CDs that made up the original game.

Here's the ini file...

[Alias]
HD0:=C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Black Isle\\Baldur's Gate\\
CD1:=D:\\CD1\\
CD2:=D:\\CD2\\
CD3:=D:\\CD3\\
CD4:=D:\\CD4\\
CD5:=D:\\CD5\\
CD6:=D:\\CD6\\
[Program Options]
SoftSrcKeyBltFast=0
SoftBltFast=0
SoftSrcKeyBlt=0
SoftBlt=0
SoftMirrorBlt=0
Translucent Shadows=1
Path Search Nodes=4000
[GameSpy]
Region=0
[Program Options]
Volume Music=40
[Game Options]
Memory Access=100
Footsteps=1
Weather=1
[Config]
CacheSize=240

It seems to work if I put the BG DVD in the drive instead of the ToTSC CD that it normally seems to require. I've never encountered this behaviour before though.

I'm not sure it will work with your version, but you could try setting your CD locations to show the location of your game on the HD. So for instance:
CD1:=C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Black Isle\\Baldur's Gate\\data
etc for CD2 to CD6

Note though that I would also recommend that you uninstall and reinstall the game to something other than the default location (like C:\\Games\\BG). That default was set when windows operated rather differently and versions from Vista onwards protect the Program Files location, which can cause a number of problems with the game.

You might also want to increase path search nodes and cache size to their maximums unless your computer is very low-spec (computers generally are much more powerful than when the game came out and can comfortably handle the maximum specs).

Thanks, changing those paths seems to have fixed the problem. Bit puzzled as to how the other areas were working - if there was a problem with the CD4 path, you would expect it to affect alll the other CD paths too.
