Does anyone actually die on screen in this show? I tried watching an episode after hearing so many people sing it's praises, but the characters seemed terribly childish and the violence was toned down to the point of near nonexistance, so pretty much what I'd expect from a show aimed at kids. What are the redeeming factors here?

Yes, two were actually decapitated a couple of episodes back (off screen, but you can tell because of everyone in the room's expression and how sadistic the person who gave the order is). There are a fair amount of cameos from the OT and the characters are portrayed well. It starts out light in tone and gets progressively darker, just like The Clone Wars did. Some of the episodes suck (Droids in Distress and The Imperial Academy, I am looking at you), but it starts to pick up towards the end of the season.

Edit: Trailer for Season finale:

He should arrive just as the Rebels escape or one of them should die.

When Vader appears things should always be super serious, I hope they don't turn him into the General Grievous of this show.

Grievous did a least get better later on (like in the Maul comic that takes place after "The Lawless" and the uncompleted Kyber Crystal arc). Perhaps that was their way of making it up to the fans. Although, I think there's little cause to worry about how they'll portray Vader because Grievous was always intended to be a coward. What happened was that Tartakovsky took a lot of creative freedom when portraying Grievous in the Clone Wars micro-series, so naturally there were fans that had this expectation of the character that was later contradicted.

So the rumors were true... What do I do with my tinfoil hat now?

I wonder if they'll keep Vader in his original place as Tarkin's subordinate for the span of the show. He did not seem like he had attained any "official" high position among the imperials until after A New Hope, seeing his character brought back to that will keep the show in line with the film & let Vader be explored in a relatively fresh way.

Just watched it, best episode yet. I'm very surprised that

I kind of feel like it is a mistake getting to Vader at this point (unless Season 2 is going to be the last season ), I feel like they should have sent in more inquisitors instead and when they failed had Vader show up (season 3 or 4). This'll be interesting though, I can't wait to see him choke people. I was really surprised that the episode was 30 minutes instead of an hour long, but the trailers made me believe that

Spoiler
.

Great show, I can't wait for season 2. Let the death toll continue to climb  ^_^

I wouldn't fully say that, it is valid to say that the show is lighter and softer than Clone Wars because of Disney. They even had to get Tarkin and now Vader to show up to change that

The Clone Wars started out really kiddy-ish too, in fact it was more so. It took it until about Season 3 to start to get dark and gritty if I recall correctly. It takes 5 or 6 episodes for things in Rebels to really heat up and episode 11 has implied decapitation which is something that we didn't get until Season 5 of the Clone Wars. The Season Finale was also dark and the ending has some dark implications for the future of our heroes and what they must face.

The entire cast has to die just so it actually fits with the original trilogy.

I sort of agree, but I see how they could make it not be an issue, considering that they are just a single cell and are pretty much confined to Lothal. Light spoilers inside:

Spoiler

Although, Dave Filoni has talked about potentially animating a portion of Return of the Jedi to have the cast of the Ghost present for the assault on the Death Star 2. I'm looking for a source, but I'm not having much luck, so just mark this one up as being for the rumor bin, I guess.

____________________________________________________________________________________

Edit: I can't find it, but I did find a good interview with Dave Filoni: http://www.starwars....s-rebels-part-2

Here is something that I covered in the spoilers tag, it explains it better than I did and without spoilers:

StarWars.com: I have a bit of a continuity challenge for you. In Return of the Jedi, Yoda tells Luke, “When gone am I, the last of the Jedi will you be.” But now he knows that Kanan and Ezra are out there. We obviously don’t know at this point what will happen to them, but is that something you’re aware of?

Dave Filoni: I don’t see it as a challenge at all. It’s what the Sith call an absolute. When Obi-Wan says to Luke, “Your father was the greatest starfighter pilot in the galaxy,” is that true? Or is that something you tell a kid because you want him to believe his father was great? It doesn’t have to be empirical or absolutely true. Saying Luke is “the last,” is that a singular thing, or is he the last of a group? I don’t know.

It definitely is something that comes up, and we discuss that moment all the time for what it could mean. It is possible to interpret it as, Luke is the last person that’s following the path as laid out by the Jedi Order, which we knew. The way of the Jedi is not the only way to use the light side of the Force. Luke is taught by Obi-Wan and Yoda, who very much followed the dogma of the day. So, he is the last of that line for sure. That’s absolutely true. But you don’t have to be a Jedi to use the Force. You don’t have to be a Sith to use the dark side.

Spoiler

I'm expecting Captain Rex at some point.

It would be cool if he had left the Empire or leaves the Empire during Rebels and joins the Rebellion. It would be interesting to see how the rest of the Rebels would react to having a Clone in their ranks. It would also be neat if had left the Empire and became a Bounty Hunter at some point after the Clone Wars ended.

It would be super sweet if there was a scene where Vader ended up calling in some Bounty Hunters in an attempt to destroy the Lothal Rebels and Rex is among them.

I'm glad they did because it was a neat way to tie Rebels to TCW.
