I  read the wiki atricle concerning how translators work and I thought "Hey wait, so this whole time I was talking to Garrus (one of my favorites) I wasn't actually hearing him, for real?" I was a little irked by this thought. To think that all those conversations with him were through translator and not hearing his true words.

Of course, we don't know if Shepard can speak Turian or Asari or whatever, but how do you guys feel about this? I would really REALLY love to hear Garrus, Liara, Wrex, and Tali talk in their own tongue.

Shepard could have been speaking galactic basic for all we know. Notice how we hear the Prothean recordings on Ilos in english, only for our squad to mention that they don't understand the language.

It'd be fitting to have companions utter some untranslateable words here and there. Like the Batarians do in bdts. It's even explained in the codex.

Shepard has to google translate every time she receives an email from Liara. It becomes a chore after a while, really.

Because if you couldn't understand the aliens there would be no character development. The weak excuses made by Bioware (universal translators) really just serve to justify the character development, which was clearly more important to them than 100 percent cohesive lore. I mean it always bothered me that humans made up like 70 percent of every planet in star wars, but you just have to accept these things for sake of the story. There is no canonical conclusion.

Yes, everyone uses real time translations as per the codex tells us:



"Technology: Translation Human cultures remain linguistically divided. Some converse in Spanish, others in Mandarin, Arabic, Swahili, etc. Every alien race has their own equally broad panoply of languages and dialects.



Most individuals know only their mother tongue, and rely on machine translation. Modern portable computers allow anyone with a few hundred credits of equipment to enjoy seamless real-time translation of alien languages, courtesy of handheld PDAs, computers in clothing or jewelry, or sub-dermal implants. Without fast and accurate translation, galactic trade and culture would not exist.



Governments provide subsidized software, updated through the public extranet "on the fly", often as users approach spaceport customs facilities. Even the batarians, who isolated themselves from galactic society nearly two decades ago, take pains to provide up-to-date glossaries and linguistic rules, though most suspect that this is only so they can continue exporting propaganda.

Hanar, for example, cannot reproduce the spoken language of any humanoid species, and other races cannot reproduce hanar bioluminescence without mechanical aid. More likely they were all speaking a shared galactic language, given the accents.

As a career officer in the Alliance military Shepard no doubt had to learn Galactic as a part of his training. It is after all the lingua franca of Citadel Space, and no doubt also the default language of the Citadel Fleet. The various races that make up the military forces serving the Council would need a common language to communicate with each other both on a daily operational basis, and in the heat of battle. Obviously that common language would be Galactic.



I assume that when Shepard is speaking to his alien comrades that he speaking Galactic. As members of races actually serving on the Council Garrus and Liara are no doubt fluent in it, and Tali and Wrex would at least have a basic command of it. Wrex no doubt would have picked up some in his travels as a mercenary, and the Quarians frequently interact with other races for trade purposes. Galactic is most likely the language used in those transactions. Of course, it would also come in useful during a Quarian's Pilgrammage, as it is doubtful much of anyone speaks Quarian expect for other Quarians.

On Noveria when Shepard talks to the asari scientist at Peak 15, he can ask her what she does. After she explains it, Shepard can complain and say something along the lines of "...just say it in galactic." This means Shepard is speaking in galactic throughout the game and so instead of getting subtitles everyone speaks in english.

Shepard and Liara get married, have children together and have a wonderful life. Shepard's translator unfortunately malfunctions and he can't get it replaced because it's life threatening at his advanced age.

The whole "galactic basic" theory is a bit flawed. This isn't Star Wars. In the Mass Effect universe, Basic is a rudimentary trade language. It cannot convey much more than basic ideas like how much an order will cost, how many units you're buying, whether you have your receipt or not, etc.

in nearly every sci fi book i have read so far where there is a central government composed of multiple species. a galactic common language is almoast always used. so if there was a translator it is probibly just translating common into english for the players sake

As some have said, I think they are speaking in Galactic Basic, kinda like how Star Wars does it. And well, depending from where you hail from (IRL), this Galactic Basic might be English, or German, or French, or whatever.

I'm assuming in the other language dubs, the lips are synced correctly to the language, right?

I don't see why futuristic translators couldn't be more sophisticated to provide different accents and accurate translation.



I don't think most people speak "basic" since I imagine the Trade language would pretty much be a pidgin language. Everyone likely relies on the translators.

I just think of it as a translation convention. We are meant to assume there is some sort of Galactic Standard Language that is relatively easy to learn.

I'm surprised there aren't more accents. The quarians have a wide range of them but not many of the other species do if I'm remembering correctly.
