It'd be fitting to have companions utter some untranslateable words here and there. Like the Batarians do in bdts. It's even explained in the codex.

Quarians do this occasionally, iirc.

There's also Leiutenant Girard(Colonist side mission) and Dr. Chloe Michelle just to name a few.

As for aliens with human sounding accents there's Li the turian mechanic on Noveria and the Krogan mechanic on Tuchanka(what's all the mechanics having Brooklyn style accents?).

I don't have a problem with hearing aliens speak english since it'd be hard to follow the story if they didn't.  Although it's funny hearing them curse in their native language every now and then.

I actually think Samara maaay speak English...she does say that she likes to keep herself informed on all of the major races in the galaxy, and knew about Samurais etc, so yeah, given the nature of the Asari to know and understand every culture, I say likely

If any of you guys have read ME: Ascension, it seems like everyone generally uses a translator when talking to others so they understand them as if they were speaking in their own language. If I recall well, Khalee Sanders used her translator when talking to a quarian or something, translating every singe word that came out of the quarian's mouth in English for her to understand. Also, there was mention of some sort of galactic language (the book calls it "common trade language"), which is probably the one you guys speak of. Apparently it's not spoken in places like Omega, however.

Yakshi is from an old Aryan word meaning demon, I think. I'm pretty sure that's just Bioware using poetic license.


It's covered in Revelation and Ascension that most people have translators either implanted or as part of their armour, jewellery etc etc. Like someone said before, Kahlee Sanders has one as a pendant around her neck.

Being Alliance military, it's likely that Shepard has some kind of implanted translator. Less hassle than carrying it around on armour, which they don't always wear, or as jewellery which is probably prohibited in the miltary.

Not really. Much like how Old English is more or less dead in modern culture except in old literature and works, it simply implies that the word "Ardat Yakshi" came from an Asari dialect that has since died out. A dialect refers to a subset of a particular language afterall, and not the language itself.

I've always been curious as to what langauge my Shepard actually speaks with his non-human crew. I would think to myself "It can't be English, can it?"

Using a translator attached to his neck\\wrist \\belt would make a lot of sense.

It'd be really, really difficult haha. A lot of languages vary a LOT based purely on context, something a machine is unable to judge. Like, for a simple example, the way you use a verb in French/German/Italian(likely others, those are all I speak haha )have to be changed whether you are talking to a figure of authority or just a casual friend.

And you sometimes have to even change verbs if there's an "element of doubt" in a sentence haha. No machine can judge that yet This is where my future job comes in handy

^ Agreed. It would also require some special technology of some sort. According to Ascension, the translators used by characters in the ME universe are tiny and barely noticeable. I don't think we're that technologically sophisticated just yet.

And then of course there are various nuances and words that most foreigners would not know about if they have not spent time with the language for long, like the differences between "po" and "opo" in my native Tagalog, or "chan", "kun", "sama" in Japanese. And of course, there will be words and concepts that don't have a direct translation to another language relying on the meaning instead - you can actually see this in Mass Effect when Tali says "Bosh'tet" or Thane said "Siha", both which mean concepts that don't have an analogous word in English.

I highly doubt the galactic "basic" would be english if anyone is implying that. Humanity just recently entered the Galaxy. More likely it would be the Asari lingo since they were the first to use Mass Relays.

There's a common trade language which is used in Ascension, but there's a limit to it..obviously...cause it's a trade language. Most people probably rely on their translators to get by.

*edit* Also thinking about context, I'm going to speculate that not every single human or alien has a translator. Some probably can't afford the technology. Some probably won't need it, for example those that live on their homeworlds e.g. Earth, Tuchanka, whatever, and don't come into contact with alien species ever....and most likely any alien species that visits another's homeworld would have translators anyway.

It would make sense that people living off-world, such as humans on Omega or otherwise, would have a translator because they'd be interacting with different species on a daily basis.
