I actually had absolutely no trouble dealing with Jacob, I just tried avoiding asking relationship/really personal oriented questions. The thing with Mass Effect is that you can't say things like "I talk with you a lot but that doesn't mean I enjoy doing it with everyone" and expect to stay friends with that person. I never really had much trouble keeping friends with my companions. I guess some people are better at reading and catching on what are "flirtatious" quotes rather than others and that is why the devs have decided to put in DA II and now a in DA I an even more refined system to identify what you are about to say? It's called "reading in-between the lines".

I wonder if this difficulty to grasp such a concept is why the writers often put in REALLY blunt lines so players with more straight forward personalities aren't driven crazy?

Yeah because obviously everyone who thought simply saying hello to Jacob wouldn't lead to flirting is a dopefiend who can't grasp such simple concepts and totally fail at reading in between the lines..

WHAT IDIOTS WE ALL ARE

I guess saying hi in ME means We'll bang ok.

Well duh :P

It's less of "reading between the lines" and more of scripted lovelock issues. DA:O was a horrible offender when it came to connotation of dialogue. To advance through relationships, you had to often choose very specific dialogue options. To get into a relationship, often it came about by asking or saying totally unrelated things; with Leliana, a relationship was scripted to begin with her if you chose the dialogue option "She meant a lot to you, didn't she?" after completing her loyalty quest. A totally unrelated dialogue option locked you in a relationship with her.

You can never be too careful, even with portraits to describe your dialogue options.

In ME4 "we'll bang ok" is the first thing you'll say to the antagonist when you meet them.

Where romance is concerned, and taking into account the number of times people accidently romance characters when all they wanted was a friendship?

Is it a wonder devs need to be blunt about it and now have to put heart images telling the player what they are about to say is flirtatious? :?

See, I really like that we are getting further explanations when it comes to giving orders and what is it we really mean by them in DA I but, when it comes to speaking with people and courtesy, is explanation to "We'll bang, ok?" actually necessary?

When the very first time you talk to a character, you click hi and it starts off flirting, that is not the players fault at all, nor should they not complain. It's horrible that just pisses peopel off.

Some people are flirtatious by nature. Doesn't mean they mean anything serious by it though.

Naw naw, it's great design, we just fail at reading sublety! :wizard:

Ugh, seriously, we don't need a damn heart icon, we just need dialogue choices that make goddamn sense for a change.

"Hello House"... (can you read how hot and bothered I am for you right now? <3:wub:<3)

It's annoying when flirtatious by nature is forced on your character, though. Or any character. That's why I regard Isabella and Zevran as two of the most annoying characters of any game I've played.

Some people like flirtyness, but it shouldn't be forced into every dialogue piece.

Shepard never did any of that in ME, why should she start in ME2 right off the bat with some guy she just met, part of a group she does not trust. There is a massive issue there.

It's worse with Kelly.

That's down to the character's script and their writer. And in my case also the reason why I hardly ever spoke to those two. Not everyone is going to like it and I'm sure there are people who love it.

IRL there are also people like that. Just live and let live, I always say.

Oddly enough it didn't strike me as an issue at first, might be since the Shep I played had a fairly laid back attitude, it should've become much more apparent later on but in my defense I was distracted by sultry Jen Hale voice .

I see we're not actually talking about the interview, nor about the cinematic scenes, nor are we even talking about Dragon Age any more.

We're done here.
