Ok so I am wondering how the main plot points will carry over into ME2 if we don't have a save file from ME1. For example I no longer have my save file for when I romanced Ashley. Is there a feature at the start of the game to say yes Wrex is alive, I let Kaiden die, was in love with Ashley, and saved the old council?
ME 1 choices in ME 2 with no save file?

No. If you start as the default Shepard, that game assumes that Wrex and Kaidan died, you romanced no one, and the council was killed.

I don't want to pass game again (save deleted), to just get Wrex in ME2

If that is true, it's pretty stupid. I don't want to have to beat ME1 again, just so I can save the council and Wrex. But....there was this exchange during the Best Buy Q&A

Guest-73: Is it possible for imported Shepherds to change history when asked questions about the past, 1984 style?
CaseyH-ME2: There's some confusion about how the game sets your "canon" for the backstory. One report said that you just answer some questions to set what has happened - not true...
CaseyH-ME2: The way it works is that if you import an ME1 character, that sets all the backstory details of what has happened so far. If you start from scratch, there is a set of default events that work better for new players to the ME universe....
CaseyH-ME2: Then, when you get through the intro, you have a conversation where you are asked a few questions - if you are in an imported character, they're just testing your memory and will tell you if your answer is wrong. But if you have a new character, you are able to set some last details through the answers to your questions.

Hopefully this means we can change it KOTOR 2 style, without having to play ME1 again.

Actually it does not assumes that Kaidan died, only if you start a male Shepard. If you go with a female, he will be alive and well, while Ash... well, poor little Ash.

Why? Why? Why? Do I really have to buy Mass Effect 1 for PC if I want the council alive?

This has angered me greatly if i'm honest.
Having bought the original mass effect on xbox 360 and from the start planning to bu mass effect 2 for PC, i was happy when all over the interwebs there were reports coming in saying i would have a choice as to what my Shepard had actually done in mass effect 1 before going into Mass Effect 2. Then my Mass Effect 2 Collectors Edition arrived in the post, i installed it, whilst reading the comic that came with it, started it up, and then the game lied.
I was told that my Shep had let the council die, which in all of my 7 playthroughs of Mass 1 i had done only once, as a woman soldier with a attitude problem, for fun. It then informed me that my Shep had let Ashley live, which again, I had never done as i never did like her in the first place, later i was informed that i had killed Wrex, and allowed Udina to become part of the, I mean come on, who wanted him on the council, he's a total git!
Still i powered on, completing the game and at the end being told there would be new options for me if i carried the character across into a new game, which i gathered meant this time i would be able to decide for myself what my Shep did, turns out that wasn't what it meant.
I have since bought Mass Effect 1 on the PC, found out how easy it was, and given up, I'm not going to spend however many hours it is making sure that i can replicate a previous playthrough just so i cqan get my story as i want it in mass Effect 2, in fact, i dont particularly want to play it anymore at all. i almost wish i'd bought mass 2 on 360 now.
