I am getting less and less optimistic about all of this

The DA team showed they listened to the fans and in what seems like a silent but PRACTICAL admission if fault showed off the DAI demo.

Mac is basically saying "we did the right thing even tho a lot of people did not like it"

Well....lovely

Yeah, if in hindsight they still wouldn't have changed anything, you have to wonder how much was learned i the first palce.

That the next ME will likely have nothing to do with Shepard or any chocies Shepard made is something of a silver lining though.  Sadly, Shep's story is radioactive wasteland now, and the further away they stay fro it, the better.

Good the farther they stay away from Shep and the ending, the better.

BTW....I have no problem with them stepping away from the mess they created

I just would like to be reassured that either

• Mac is in no way shape or form the lead writer (or lead of anything)
• they ACTUALLY learned and they are going to actively prevent such a situation in the future

One of the lessons they probably learned is not to listen too carefully to bitter, destructive "fans" who set them up for failure, no matter what they do. Wise move, in my opinion. Just do your thing.

But it seems like they also learned a thing or two about being reckless with the PC's life for the sake of abstract, contentious storytelling, which could be a good thing or a bad thing. If it leads to smarter and more thorough writing towards challenging endings, then good. If it leads to safe "blow 'em up!" endings that stroke the player's ego and power-trip desires, thus cradling their need for their self-insert to survive, then it's bad.

(Mac Walters and Casey Hudson played the most important roles in creating anything Mass Effect, yadda yadda, I don't hate the games.)

I do want to point out though, I don't like their premise of not wanting to call it "Mass Effect 4".

If anything, calling it "Mass Effect - Lame Subtitle" would do it a huge disservice by giving me the feeling I'm playing a spin-off and not a "real" game. I would understand had the previous games been named "The Reaper Wars", but Mass Effect seems like the perfect link to tie all possible games in this universe together - regardless of the plot.

I'm cautiously curious about the direction they want to take with this, since they pretty much already said that it won't happen after the Reaper war and it won't include any of the cast.

We both know the line about "wouldn't have changed anything" is just more PR talk. Just plain old crticism deflection.

I agree but would extend it to all fans. Not just "destructive" ones.

Let the game live or die by its own merit.

Well now if the next ME game is not going to reference Shepard or ANY of his/her actions AT ALL that does bring up a very important question for me.

How will ME: Next still be considered Mass Effect?

I am not asking out of disdain for the series and the people working on it, I am genuinely curious about it. The things Shepard did and factions s/he interacted with form the basis for what made Mass Effect, Mass Effect.

For example, I really liked the Geth, are we not going to see them at all in ME:Next?

Are they and the Quarians going to be cut from the game? Is the title going to be set before the end of ME 3? Shepard was the deciding factor in a good majority of ME's iconic species' fates. By not referencing Shepard and/or ignoring the events of the previous games, how can we still have those races present?

Parallel universe without Shepard, Reapers, old crew and stuff.  I hope.

Usually I'm good at brainstorming possibilities, but I have no clue where they're going. They make it sound completely out of left field and disconnected.. like so out of left field it's in a different universe and they don't even have Mass Relays yet. I'm waiting for the day they stop being needlessly mysterious. I'd like to know the actual premise.

I'm on the fence with the "Parallel" part.

I believe there's still potential for the Leviathans. And depending on your ending they could play a big role in the galaxy. But I will say its probably safer to just discard all of it and start over.

you know how I usually tell people that if devs are being quiet, well, THIS quiet about a game something is wrong/they think saying something will ****** people off? You know how people usually respond saying I read too much into it? You know how it usually turns out I was right?

Yeah, I hope I am wrong this time but knowing Mac + Casey they are adjusting their artist hats and possibly planning a pointless prequel

Tell that to all the Trekkies who think Abrams ruined the franchise with terrible writing and plot holes.

As far as I'm concerned, there's no potential in the series without humans. To me, that's all the ME series will be about. About how humans are being thrown on the center stage of galactic politics, and how your character plays a part in that. I can't say I care as much for Protheans, Leviathans, or one of their minion races.

Unlikely, given that they'll have the ME races/places in the next game. I think the reason they're so ambiguous and cryptic about it is that they don't really know what they're doing yet, either.

I was referring to the concept not the execution

unlikely, they are 18 months into development. Even accounting for a 4 years dev cycle they are still half way into it, not having such a HUGE premise nailed down now is very VERY unlikely
