Well, it's new to me anyway. I'm thinking that the Collectors are against the Reapers, not with them. I think the Collectors know something the rest of civilized space never caught onto: The mass effect relays, citadel, and resulting technology was built by the Reapers and thus are the tools the Reapers use to extinquish galactic life. We know from ME 1 that the Reapers built the citadel and mass relay network in order to control how technology advanced for all the different species. What if the Collectors have broken the mold, and are thinking "outside the box." Meaning: they are developing or have developed their own technology not based on the mass effect phenomenon. This would make their technology both unpredictable and possible deadly to the Reapers, and could also explain their brand of "research."
I apologize if this theory has been brought up before; I just thought of it while reading the mass effect wikia entry on the reapers.
New collector theory...

I've never seen a thread dedicated solely to it, but i've certainly seen the idea on these forums before.
Don't take that the wrong way, its still a decent theory.

A more interesting theory would be that the Collectors are collecting humans to keep safe while the reapers wipe out all life in the universe, and then release the ones they've collected to restart the cycle over again. How about that?

The Xbox 360 world review says the defining moment is
When you board the CENSORED and discover the CENSORED are actually the CENSORED
The first censored is obviously the collector ship
hmmmmm

Master poster, thats a really a good theory, I myself have thought of something similar. Maybe the Collectors neead all these humans, whatever to create an large enough armada of beings, not possible foot troops (that would suck against those reaper ships) but beings to take control of an insane amount of Collector ships.

Seriously though, I suspect they're probably Protheans, but that's just a guess.

Btw, the CENSORED bit was in the mag, I didn't put that in, they wouldn't give a big twist like that.

The Collectors lie beyond the Omega-4 Relay, and often trade with black market slave traders. They operate independently and have no alligiences with other species. They will often ask for specific species with certain body types, such as 14 left-handed Batarians. I preety much infered this from the book, so your assumptions on The Collectors are correct.
