To each their own, but I have to say that this game is one of the better ones I've seen in quite some time. Good enough in fact to take my attention away from WoW; a game that has taken up 100% of my gaming time for the past two + years. Is it as good as BG? In some ways yes, in most, probably not. But then again, BG is the holy grail of CRPGs as far as i'm concerned and I'm not quite sure any game will ever quite live up to it's pedigree.

You know, I played the BG series in fits and spurts back in college, but between a social life and studying it kind of fell by the wayside for me and became unremarkable....something to fill 10 minutes here or 20 there.

Since everyone goes on abut how great it is, I decided to go acquire a copy of BG2 and give it a whirl. Wow. I just can't get int it. I think modern games have jaded me or something. I cant stand watching tiny little characters on a giant screen stumble around and wait for me to try and figure out the backwards-seeming controls, which pisses me off because I don't remember the controls seeming awkward or the characters looking so damned small. I intend to iv it another go sometime this week, but now every time I see someone o on about how great it is I wonder if thy have rose-tinted glasses, or I am just a jaded old bastard.

A good part of it’s appeal (at least for me) is that it; A) used the Dungeons and Dragons rule set And B) came out at a time when CRPGs (especially those using the DnD licence) were few and far between. BG all but saved the CRPG genre from going the way of the dinosaur. So like it or not, you can thank BG and it’s creators for raising the bar and giving us RPG geeks plenty of material to enjoy for years to come. =)

Well in that case DA is an instant classic for me because it leads the game industry away from that abortion of a D&D system, 4e.

Nostalgia is all well and good, but claiming a game is 'the best ever' simply because it revitalized a genre doesn't necessarily make it true.

You completely miss the point of Baldur's Gate, my friend. They are just there to visualize.
BG has a great story, incredible set of characters (every single BG player will go nuts when talking about characters. If someone tries to rob you or beat you and you know they play BG, just say "MINSC AND BOO". He'll be so distracted that you can have a coffee, have a nice meal and move away nice and quiet) and the D&D mechanics. We all know they aren't the best, but the diversity in spells and many different classes make it fun to play.

You need to feel the game, not see it.

I do understand how it feels, but if you give it a go and last enough time to learn how to play (tutorial in bg2 helps alot) and actually start the game.. it's just... adventure of a life time.
Then again, if you are the action-type player and/or don't enjoy deep characters and their dialogues much, you may not like it. Take note that by "deep" I don't mean boring. Jan Jansen is no doubt one of the funniest fiction characters, not just in games but also literature. Yet he has a history and real personality. Argh. Just.. try to give it a go if you ain't an action-oriented player. Fun guaranteed.

Jesus. Jan Jansen's dialog at the end of the game had me rolling on the floor. It was so perfect.

Indeed. One mans garbage and such. But in all seriousness, even if BG isn't your cup of tea it is still unequivocally a very good game. Even if you only consider the production values.

Also combat. Baldur's Gate has the best combat in any rpg I've ever played. seriously. And before anyone starts throwing all the flaws the combat system has....keep in mind that a masterpiece is recognized for what it does, not what it doesn't do. No one complains that Maradona could only shoot with his left foot...

Elder Scrolls IV still is the best medieval RPG overall. Much more freedom there. Much more.

Your idea of freedom differs from mine...l use to think Oblivion was awesome until;
-Repetivie quests
-Repetive npcs[speech especially]
-Main storyline really took a dive half way in[especially when you had to close like 7 Gates in a row]
-Towns pretty much the same

Just cause you can travel doesnt make the open world that interesting...you encounter guards with the same speeches, creatures in the same areas...and ruins that always had a back door...after you found it from the inside.

More, is not always better.

More is not always better is right. Oblivion's main quest was underwhelming, but the side quests made the game.

Quest achievements were more interesting overall.

1- You can own a large house.
2- You can be a vampire.
3- You can move up the ranks in the guilds.
4- Dialogue choices were good.

Wow! you're the guy that sparked the David Gaider-slaughter!

I have to say, though, that DA has lived up to BG for me, so far.  I expect that when I get to know this game like I do BG,  I will be just as happy with it.

You can't see the combat up close and personal.
How interactive is that ???

What? You don't have to play in that mode. Its an OPTION.

You have to be the biggest, most pathetic apologist I have ever seen ever post on the bioware boards.  Maybe take a break from bioware nuthugging and take a look around the web.  He's talking about The memory leak that cripples performance after a couple hours and scene transitions, and the shale bug when the golems dialogue breaks and all you can say is 'dulef gar' to it, then magically appear outside the level in a void staring into it from the outside.

Ignorant, wannabe know it all apologist.

Also, the frequency and time you spend posting apologist garbage lead me to believe one of two things 1)you are not employed, nor have you ever been. 2) you are an anonymous shill for bioware.

Wow the guy is venting, leave him be, don't tell him he doesn't have a right to be upset. Even if Bioware is doing the best they can, do they expect not to get angry people who don't have as much patience as others? No of course they don't. So if he wants to create a thread, venting his disappointment he can, so Goth Skunk, Render666 and so on, go to hell. No one asked you to post in here with your stupid gay ass remarks. And as for the stupid idiot person who's comment was "Get the pc version. problem solved." you are a ****ing retard FYI. Just because someone is experiencing a problem with one of the versions of the game, you tell him to get a different version? haha you sir ARE AN IDIOT. Throw yourself in a paper shredder if you find one big enough, one less self centered moron around. I really dislike comments like those.

Wow, douche much? I asked a question, I did not make a statement.

The loading problem you are talking about hasn't been confirmed to be a memory leak at all, that is just assumption by people that have no idea what a memory leak actually means, but they read it on the internet so it must be cool. I thought he had information on an actual memory leak.

I have honestly never heard of this Shale bug. Again, that is why I -asked a question-

Grow up.

Well aren't you sweet.

Going by your lack of posting history or even decent profile...take 1 guess what most will think you are.

Ive seen Sloth ease tempers, solve player questions and yes, defend a game most of us love.
Ill take him[and lm sure most other forum regs as well] and a bout of Swine flu over someone like yourself anyday.

Lots of freedom, but the story sucked.  Last time I played that game I was so sick of hearing about mudcrabs that I slew everyone in Chorral.

BG2 is definitely a superior game, ignoring the children who think otherwise. It was not the graphics that made the game or the potential 100 hours of play. It was the level of character development, story and NPC companion interaction available that you simply do not get with the current rpgs, including DA:O and ME. The hand cradted world of BG2 was also quite a major plus in it's day. I still have BG series installed and play the game/s every now and then. The characters were memorable and the villains had depth.

I, too, have -never- heard of a "Shale bug", so I'm assuming it's a single problem he caused himself, most likely an issue with mods or somesuch. And if the game caused memory leaks, we'd -all- have problems.

On-topic, I loved DAO. Simple as that.

Exactly. Just because you played the sequel first does not means that you know what the predecessor did not have. Halo did not invent video games.
