Elder Scrolls IV still is the best medieval RPG overall. Much more freedom there. Much more.

Lots of freedom, but the story sucked.  Last time I played that game I was so sick of hearing about mudcrabs that I slew everyone in Chorral.

Thanks...for some reason, reading this made me laugh out loud.  I have to concur with the above view of Oblivion.

I saw some mudcrabs by the water recently.  I steered clear of them!

The best computer rpg ever was Wizardry VI: Bane of the Cosmic Forge! Why?

-It was the first rpg I played after becoming hooked on PnP AD&D. I wasn't sure if I would ever have the chance to play an rpg again

-After days of whittling down files on my IBM 286 (ramped up to 4mb HD memory), I actually got it to work (Eureka!)

-Having any kind of graphic sytem was just mind-blowing.

-I really enjoyed having to draw my own maps then.

-I was much younger, and had fewer RL issues swimming around in my brain. Therefore, immersion was more easily attained.

-Oh, and it was probably decently made to begin with.

Ever told your friends how a TV show you saw ages ago was absolutely hilarious, hired the video, watched it with your friends, and felt more than a little embarrassed? Same deal with games I think.

Personally, I don't even try to replay old games any more because I know I will never enjoy them as much as the first time. I would prefer to leave them as pleasant memories than have to examine my nostalgia for them in the cold light of day - a bit like trying to rekindle an old romance.

BTW, if a games company could combine the open feel of elder scrolls with the engaging story of a Bioware creation, then surely they would be on to a winner. No more feelings of isolation (as in the former) or claustophobia (as sometimes in the latter). Of course, this is an obvious ideal, but something worth aspiring to imo.

p.s. Apologies that all this has nothing to do with the OP's complaint, but a thread that started with such inauspicious beginnings has taken on a life of it's own. At least he/she has something to read when checking back :D

btw, I know it can get a bit rough on the DO:A forum at times. I decided to check the ME forum just to compare the standard of dialogue. The first thread I clicked on was this:

http://social.biowar...03/index/673226

Okay, the original post was asking for trouble but anyone who responds like that first dude deserves a life time ban. Are they short on moderators over there or what?

Wow! you're the guy that sparked the David Gaider-slaughter!

I have to say, though, that DA has lived up to BG for me, so far.  I expect that when I get to know this game like I do BG,  I will be just as happy with it.

(when I originally wrote this post, i was rather surprised and said what came to my mind immediatley. It wasn't flamish or anything, but made sound too much like a p/o'd fanboy. anywho. yeah!

The graphics are indeed daetd, although if you spend some tim with mds yu can have it looking pretty damned good.  As good as sme second-string RPGs that release today (two worlds, risen, etc).

The main story is slightly more interesting than oblivions, but the rest of the world feels much more 'alive' and different regions have a different 'feel' to them.   Also, the spells as a whole are way more interesting and diverse, IMO.

I only disagree with you about the world feeling alive. I don't have that at all in DA:O. In Oblivion each NPC has its own schedule. They sleep, eat, gossip, go to work (merchants, sometimes farmers, guards), visit an inn, travel to another town at given times, etc. The NPCs in DA:O are rather static. They stand still or at best walk randomly without any purpose. If DA:O's NPCs gossip then they do that all the time. In Oblivion you can see NPCs interrupting their journey (or whatever they do) to talk to someone. Of course Oblivion's system is not perfect, but it sure feels more alive to me.

Edit: Also, Oblivion's NPCs are members of factions (citizens, guards, guilds, etc.). Some of these are hostile to each other. When they encounter each other or when they encounter creatures they will fight. If it results in a guard viewing a crime they will chase those NPCs. Which can lead to funny situations if you have an eye for it. ;)

Another edit: A player also has an infamy rating and the NPCs have an aggression rating (forgot its name). That can lead to NPCs being more friendly or hostile towards you. That (in combination with your mercantile skill) can also effect the prices in shops. The gossip is usually about the things you did as a character. All those small things mentioned give me the idea that Oblivion's world responds to your actions and deeds.

I believe one of DA's major weaknesses is the lack of consequences, other than companion dialogues.
However, if DA was meant to be a free-play game, I'm sure it would have many features to support the idea. Dragon Age, like Baldur's Gate series, is a story-telling game. It's very limited in the paths you can take, but those paths include so much in it.
I never played Oblivion, but I'm told Fallout 3 dialogues were superior or at least comparable to Oblivion and if that's the case, I'm pretty sure Oblivion can't match the story telling qualities of DA. Not slandering, just saying they are different games who do different things better.

I, too, have -never- heard of a "Shale bug", so I'm assuming it's a single problem he caused himself, most likely an issue with mods or somesuch. And if the game caused memory leaks, we'd -all- have problems.

On-topic, I loved DAO. Simple as that.

Wrong on both counts. There is actually a thread on it. Probably buried deep by now. I had it on my first playthrough. Not seen it since.

Then it would have been fixed almost immediately, as I've had the game from release and have had no problems whatsoever.

It was really intermittant. Certainly not gamebreaking, for me anyway. I lost Warden's Keep too and had to play through without it. I could have loaded up an old save to reclain it but that would have required going back too far. I read about a possibility that having "automatically log into DA's servers" checked may have caused the Wardens Keep problem. So now I manually log in and both problems have disappeared. If the patch fixed it, is was definately a save problem for me at that point.

Erm what memory leak and shale bug?

You have to be the biggest, most pathetic apologist I have ever seen ever post on the bioware boards.  Maybe take a break from bioware nuthugging and take a look around the web.  He's talking about The memory leak that cripples performance after a couple hours and scene transitions, and the shale bug when the golems dialogue breaks and all you can say is 'dulef gar' to it, then magically appear outside the level in a void staring into it from the outside.

Ignorant, wannabe know it all apologist.

Also, the frequency and time you spend posting apologist garbage lead me to believe one of two things 1)you are not employed, nor have you ever been. 2) you are an anonymous shill for bioware.

Didn't read the rest of the topic, your post pissed me off so much I HAD to reply to it.
The dude was simply asking a question which I was about to post aswell, if it didn't show up earlier in the thread (which it did, and then you showed up)
I haven't experienced any bugs what so ever in my 3 playthroughs (well 1x complete and 2x 75%) of Dragon Age: Origins. No memory leak and no shale bug. I don't know WHAT you're ranting about, and especially not why you reply to a question with 1 of the biggest flamewalls I've ever seen on that short space, hell I don't even know where you find the freaking guts for it to answer a question like that!

I loved the Baldur's Gate series and when it came to next gen consoles (Xbox 360 and PS3) i looked forward to more content after Mass Effect.

i have to say though.... if the support for Mass Effect 2 is anything like the Xbox 360 version of Dragon Age Origins i will never buy it and will only consider DA:O Awakening if they fix the issues with DA:O that we have now.

just thought i should sound off

I'm really dissapoint in you for making a dissapointing post without provining any dissapointing reasons.

side note: what kind of support do you have in mind?

You also pretty much strike me as a shill.  Maybe use the search function if you want to know about either of the bugs I mentioned.  Then again, maybe don't and keep towing the bioware line as they release garbage DLC(when they can actually release it on time) without actually resolving the issues with the game.

It's nice you didn't run into any of the random showstoppers that plague this game like a landmine infestation, however, some of us have, and getting 'lol wut bugs' as a response pretty much paints you as an apologist shill.  Sorry about pissing you off, now go die in a well.

Yeah come on guys, these forums are getting a really bad reputation. Isn't it possible to have a discussion, regardless of the topic, without resorting to such vitriol? If there is a DA:O convention some time, will it be marred by knife fights?

How about trying to win your arguments with rationality and eloquence rather than resorting to broad characterisations that you would be (or should be) ashamed to make in person? And btw the weakest defence for such behaviour is "his stupidity/ignorance/blindness/obvious bias etc made me do it". If you're feeling angry, go get some fresh air and look at some pretty birdies before clicking the submit button...please.

EDIT: And terms such as "whining" don't help a lot either
