Am I the only one who finds this to be incredibly stupid? I mean, if it comes out the release day of the game, and people are just booting it up, why not just put the DLC into the game itself?
I mean, okay, it's not so much stupid, as it is confusing. Is there simply not enough room on the two discs?
I dunno. I just want to see if I'm the only one seriously bothered by this. I've never known a game to have DLC on launch day... it seems pointless to me. Let people beat the game the way it is first... and THEN add the extras in, to see how it changes things. It's not like I hate DLC itself, at all. I loved Bring Down the Sky.
So, opinions? Who thinks it's beyond fathomable reasoning to place content as DLC on launch day, versus just sticking it onto the game discs?

Because DLC often uses a different source of funding than the original game + Bioware's day one DLC is free and comes with the main game, only pirates and people who wait to purchase it used don't get it.

I believe it's just to convince people to buy new rather than to buy used. Useless on release day, but in a few months when people have a choice between preowned or new, it may convince them to buy new. I guess that's a good reason from Bioware's pov.

That does make a bit more sense looking from those points, and it is a plus being free content. Wish they'd kept the extra party member secret, since we already know most of 'em, but at least we don't know them too well.

They could have also had two different dev teams, not to mention that the main game would have been finished and off for manufacture and all the DLC is distributed in a form that is much quicker to deploy.
Besides, there would have had to have been a defined finish point for the development cycle for the main game otherwise it could potentially have never been released as they could have kept adding to it. Instead of stopping or moving to a different project they decided to add some extra goodies for the game and they release some DLC.

There are about 4/5 weeks between the game shipping out to be put on discs (i.e. going gold) to the game's release.
That's a fairly long time in development terms so as soon as the game goes gold, they can fully focus on DLC.
I have to admit the stuff they're adding is quite major but hey ho - it's free and I'm not complaining
