anything but aggressive behavior and you will have a bad time. Ranged makes casters/archers retarded and useless, especially indoors.
What does ranged, aggressive etc. do that affects how the characters behavior? I appreciate your advice but I'm still curious about what they do and how they work. I've learned a great deal from your guides but there's nothing anywhere that I can find on why behavior/presets are there in the first place. Should I be using aggressive instead of custom? Can you suggest a sandbox method so I can learn more? Thanks again!

tactic presets are a way for people to learn how tactics work in the most basic way. like a 101 course.
behavior is an A.I. script that you select to determine how that character will behave when specific combat environments are present.
aggressive is just that. all attack all the time, which means the only movement will be when that character is out of attack range. set tactics will operate as input.
ranged forces movement away from negative area of effects and any enemy in short range. As short range is an extremely large area, this causes more problems than you can imagine. set tactics are ignored if an enemy is in short range and the movement script takes priority. Inside buildings your ranged characters will do nothing but run around, or even toward enemies if there is no other path.
the descriptions are fairly clear on what each does.
imo, just use aggressive.
