Is it possible to do this ? I seem to remember spiders in the original campaign descending from the ceiling. Can it be done / how is it done ?

Also, a few creatures (not just spiders) have cool animations that can play when they are spawned or despawned. These are the appear and disappear animations. Its fun to play with.
Since you are playing with spiders try out their disappear animation.
Here's an entry in the lexicon for an effect you can try on creatures which will play the disappear and appear. I use this for spiders that climb up to the roof, presumably crawl on teh roof (but you don't see this), and the climb back down.
