My reaction after getting the squaddies in ME3

  James- Lawlz dis meathead needs a thicker brain. Was right, crashes shuttle instead of shooting it. Imho, he is very um per-say, dumb. He's a tank tho. His dialogue isn't the greatest either.

  Liara- Asari, asari everywhere  Lol, her first scene in the vent shaft was kinda funny. To me, Liara gets too much hype. She dies non-stop no matter who is in my squad.

  EDI- Ok, so now I have to haul the AI everywhere?  She is very useless imho. I took her on Tuchunka and all she did was complain her robot head off.

  Garrus- Is that Garrus? Was excited I can get Team Dextro back. He is my second favorite squaddie in MEU. I give him the harrier and the adas and nothing can stop him. 

  Ashley- Not her again.... She still think im with Cerberis but I massacare them on site? And wow she gets lolpwned by a robot. Takes guts to let one crush your skull.

  Tali-  TALI!!!!!! Oh yeah TEAM DEXTRO FTW. Give her dat reegar carbine and arc pistol and you cant get kills lol. Plus she's always my LI anyway. Pare her up with Garrus and you got a unstoppable force.

  Javik- Didn't get FTA yet but from what Ik, he's a baws prothean.

Definitely not. I had two Nigerian friends back in college. both from different regions that eventually moved to england and then came over to US to study. both had slightly different accents from one another, but unmistakable...Javik is Nigerian.

ME1:
Kaidan - Spent half of Eden Prime taking a dirt nap. Didn't pay much attention to him or take him on many missions after that until I got experimental in subsequent playthroughs. As a conversationalist? ...meh.
Ashley - Interesting, complex character. Did NOT take a dirt nap on Eden Prime. Liked the Normandy conversations, but didn't have much use for her skillset. Still gets rolled out fairly regularly.
Garrus - Nice shot. You're coming with me, right? Could have used a personality and more armor, but had a decent skillset.
Wrex - An ill-tempered bullet-stopper with biotics? Yeah, why not. I expected him to be trouble, though. Didn't like that I was forced to compare the Genophage to the FCW.
Tali - *Throws a grenade at her attackers in the alley* Me: *grins* Oh, I already like this one... spent a lot of time on missions, too, owing to her skillset. Didn't like that I was forced to chew her out over the Geth.
Liara - *blinks* This is only the second time I've stopped by to talk to you and you're already trying to get in my pants? ...I should go. I still have a hard time seeing her as anything but a civilian; that said, I miss that crazy overpowered singularity of hers.

Jacob - 'Sup? 'Sup. ... talk to you later. Useless in combat until I modded the game to give him a rifle in place of his pistol.
Miranda - Really? I'm supposed to take you seriously in a combat zone dressed like that? Yeah, you're staying on the ship until you find some armor. *DLC armor* Oh, speak of the devil... hey, you're not half bad at this!
Tali - Hey, you're back, and you want to help? Awesome. You have your duties? Take care of your business and I'll come find you as soon as I can. The one who stood by you through everything - I saw her and Shepard as being willing to go to any lengths for each other. Canon romance.
Garrus - Oh, HELL yeah! *rocket* Oh, HELL no! Like Tali, Garrus is another I saw as the friend who was willing to go to any lengths for you, and to whom the same loyalty was owed. I wanted to hunt down Sidonis the moment I heard about him. And the Jack Bauer interrogation of Harkin? Hell yes.
Grunt - Right...well, here goes nothing. *CRUNCH*
Jack - Warden Kiril has to be the stupidest villain yet... why am I recruiting a serial killer to begin with? Didn't much care for her until a much later playthrough, when I discovered the joys of Shockwave. Still, tattoos are NOT vacuum attire.
Mordin - I know he had crazy shields, but he just looked too squishy for combat. Still, I liked him almost immediately.
Ashley - Hey, oh... just an angst-ridden cameo. Well, maybe they'll bring her back up to standards in the next game.
Thane - I REALLY wanted to get some of those mercs to fly off the bridge at Dantius Towers... oh, right. Like Jack, big entrance, limited-use skillset. Unlike Jack, never found a use for said skillset in subsequent playthroughs.
Samara - Please find a proper breastplate. I don't need another character with Pull and Throw.
Legion - You've got a lot to answer for, bub. All right, I'll hear you out. Interesting. Maybe this will work out after all.
Kasumi - *super parkour acrobatics* And that'll be the only time you ever do anything like that again, right? Yeah, figures. Oh, but I do love her flashbangs...

James - Why am I here? And who are you? Ah, who am I kidding. The guy grew on me.
Ashley - Hey, it's good to see y- whoa! Plastic surgery? And how did you jump, like, seven ranks in six months? ...I admit I was disappointed with her arc, and didn't have much use for her in combat after picking her up.
Liara - Oh, it's you again. And again... and again...
Garrus - Same guy from ME2. And I'm cool with that.
EDI - Me: *takes one look* "No." Interesting conversations, but typically doesn't leave the ship until Chronos.
Javik - "The asari have learned to write?" Oh, I already like this guy... if only he had a skillset I could actually benefit from.
Tali - Almost as good as in ME2. I wish the writers had maintained her assertive side more in the Rannoch arc, but still canon LI, still no regrets. At least she recognizes she isn't a real admiral - Ashley got kinda pissed when I questioned her spectre status.
Legion - "Shepard-Commander, this isn't what it looks like!" Me: *facepalm*

@ The Myron I'm so busy with grad school I'm not playing any games lately. With luck, I'll play for a couple hours in the weekend, just to relax. Unfortunately, I don't see myself testing the game anytime soon, I watched some videos based on your suggestion

Back on topic:

-James Vega: I had already posted my first impression, which was not great but mostly because we don't know anything about the guy when we start (unless people have watched Paragon lost or read some of the comic books before playiing the game). He's designed in an exaggeratedly muscular way (human krogan) and he looks like a football (American football) player. Just check his original concept art, you'll see what I mean.

I personally like all the characters in the trilogy with an Alliance military background, so I gave him a shot and put him in the squad rather often in the first missions. His abilities are good (I only play on Insanity) and he increased the squad's HP and shield points (as far as I know, that skill wasn't glitched in my playthrough).

I believe some his conv. were written by MW, some are silly, some are ok. I liked it when he came to your quarters to talk about the N7 program and also talks about his misgivings towards accepting a command role, since it involves seeing your men die. He had already seen most of his squad wiped out on Fehl Prime.  That's decent dialogue writing, then you have silly autodialogue, and... let's just say his writing is inconsistent. I think his aloof demeanor is supposed to be a defense mechanism to fight stress in combat, many people in the military develop this coping mechanism.

I read there was a lot opposition from other writers to include James, a brand new character, in the last game of the trilogy, they insisted that known faces needed to be the priority (hence why Tali was a squadmate, at the insistence of Weekes and Dombrow, among others). MW wanted to have her just as a Normandy visitor, like Wrex, Legion and Mordin.

Personally, I wanted to use characters from ME1 (it's my favorite cast of the trilogy), so as soon as Ash and Garrus were recruited, I didn't use him very much. He ended up being my 4th most used squadmate. Sometimes he and EDI take a lot of flak because they may have taken the spots of fan favorite characters from ME 2. I understand this point of view and I'm sorry a lot of people didn't get their ME 2 fav as a squadmate. I'm just giving my p.o.v. on Vega on his own merits and flaws. Cheers.

Garrus:nice buddy scenes,but the fact he tries to hook up with Tali if unromanced costed him my friendship,traitor

Liara:i started to hate her for forced caring about her and the asari,and her being favourited over everyone is one of the things(for the number of scenes,story parts,dialogue,full love scene) that upsets me the most
Javik:liked him,his lines were amusing.
Vega:i dislike him to be the replacement of the krogan squad member
EDI:i liked her 'love' development on Joker,but i feel that it's stupid,since it's an AI,and she's the normandy not a a sexbot,EDI possessing a robot body to get a cheap squad member slot is lame.

Nyreen: So basically this is the role Garrus would've had if Omega was actually part of the game. Makes sense, and is a far more fitting arc for him than suddenly jumping above freakin' generals in a rigid, traditionalist merit-based military.

Skipping the temporary ones, because most of the time it's clear they are short termed so I don't pay much attention to them, therefore don't have strong first impressions.

ME1:

Kaidan: I feel he lacks personality, an all around good guy. 

Ashley: She seems tough, and could be interesting.

Garrus: Turian is instant love for me, they remind me of the Protoss so much, I wanted Nihlus, but this guy is even better.

Wrex: Seems too typical as bad*** character, but he grew on me later on how he thinks differently as other Krogans.

Tali: Really like her accent and background when she's explaining what she's doing here in Citadel (really like how ME3 refers back to her injury before this encounter).

Liara: Since my first Shepard is a female adept I found Liara redundant. And I generally hate Asari in ME1, but she's grew on me too later in ME2.

ME2:

Miranda: Enjoyed the camera angle, but didn't like her attitude at all, I liked her better after the loyalty mission.

Jacob: I thought they are going to give him some important stuff to work on, but he can't be more generic and boring later on. But he's fine. 

Tali: So surprised to see her so early in game, was frustrated how late I can actually recruit her. Also noticed how much more detailed her suit became.

Zaeed: I was rather disappointed they just placed him there in the entrance for you to pick up. 

Kasumi: I was struggling whether downloading her DLC was worth it, and her entrance really sold me. Much more creative than most.

Garrus: I actually thought I killed him because his vital is not very high when the cutscene played. 

Mordin: I didn't like Salarians in ME1, until I met Mordin.

Grunt: I really thought he's going to suck, because I want Wrex. But he's surpisingly interesting. Still would prefer Wrex.

Jack: One of the best entrance in the trilogy IMO. Don't really like her body that much, but her voice is the most sexy one to me.

Thane: Since he's on the box art I thought he will be important or have more emphasis in the story, actual encounter with him is rather underwhelming, enjoyed later conversations though.

Samara: Jack has the best entrance scene, Samara has the best entrace music. Really loved her voice too. Although I don't think red fits her.

Legion: Since I knew I can't really take him to many missions after recruit he felt almost like other temporary members to me.

ME3


James: His entrance felt very rushed, a bit background would be nice.

Ashley (haven't got to Kaidan playthrough yet): She looks nice, and I really had high hopes she would redeem herself in this game, felt rather disappointed later on.

Liara: I've mentioned I like her better in ME2, and I like her even more in ME3, killing her enemies with singularity and pistol is pretty cool.

Javik: The few cutscenes of him fighting in his cycle is cool, but disorienting for me, still not sure what was their plan and what happened.

Garrus: I was very upset I did not get to actually visit the Turian homeworld, that shabby moon is not what I expected, Garrus's return makes me feel slightly better (but not much).

EDI: Was not sure what's the purpose of her as a squadmate at all, I still enjoyed her a great deal as a character in ME3, but not so much as a squadmate. Instead of a sexy robot body, make her body something like a bigger drone would be much better.

Tali: Finally!!! Although at that point I was lamenting whether I could still bring her to do enough missions to fully enjoy her as a squadmate. Her role in the entire Rannoch arc sort of made up for that though.
