When toying with Leto and modifying .ros files, I found that by making "NeverDrawHelmet" element to "1", I can make a companion's helmet Invisible. But doing the same for player.bic file does not seem to work. Is there any other way to make a PC's helmet invisible?

You don't use Leto (or any other editor) on the .bic file. Edit the file called playerlist.ifo.
p.s. VERY IMPORTANT
If you're going to edit your MOTB character - BACK UP THE WHOLE SAVED GAME FOLDER FIRST.
Doing any sort of editing sometimes makes your game load with the PC dead due to the Spirit Eater curse and game over. I have been able to get around this a couple times by touching all the files in the folder so they all have the same timestamps, but this works inconsistently.

There's also the option of not wearing a helmet.

You can always use Charlie's Item Appearance Changer, which works fast and effortlessly in game. It doesn't make it invisible but you can turn an ugly big bucket into a headband, which is almost invisible, or anything else you want.
