Initially, I supported Xbox 360 over PS3 because:
1. Xbox 360 had lower prices at launch.
2. Xbox 360 had better launch titles. Halo 3, BioShock, and Mass Effect were the "Trinity" of Xbox 360's launch titles. All three titles scored over 90+ at Metacritic. PS3's launch titles paled in comparison. None of PS3's launch titles scored 90 or better at Metacritic; the best-scored launch title was Uncharted, which had 89 metascore at launch. The much-touted Lair was an embarrassed disappointment. Everything else was just... okay.
However, as years went by, PS3 overtook Xbox 360 and became the better console. Today, PS3 is a more appealing console than Xbox 360 because:
1. Xbox 360 suffered from serious quality problems, particular the infamous Red Ring of Death. We found out that Microsoft compromised quality to rush Xbox 360 into the market to get a headstart before PS3. Xbox 360 had abysmal warranty and replacement policies. Many Xbox gamers were forced to re-purchase and replace Xbox 360.
2. Xbox 360 lost its exclusive titles over the years. The losses of Bungie and the BioShock and Mass Effect franchises were particularly heavy blows to Microsoft.
3. Many Xbox 360's so-called "exclusives" turned out to be timed/temporary exclusives, exclusive DLCs, or "console" exclusives that are also available for the PC. That was deceptive and misleading marketing.
4. Over time, PS3 has built up more and better exclusive titles in the long run. Today, PS3 has more and superior exclusive titles than Xbox 360. PS offers superior mid-to-late-generation titles like The Last of Us, the Uncharted franchise that got better over time, the LittleBigPlanet franchise, etc., which scored much higher than Xbox 360's mid-to-late-generation offerings. Xbox's 360 mid-to-late-generation exclusive titles like Alan Wake, Fable games and Too Human faltered and disappointed. PS3 has turned out to be a better long-term investment.
As third-party publishers and developers moved away from developing exclusives for Microsoft (or Sony,) Sony's first-party studios became its competitive advantage over Microsoft. On the other hand, Microsoft have lost all its AAA studios. Most notably, Bungie defected, and EA bought BioWare. The quality of Halo games have in a slow decline since Bungie left the franchise, so the Halo franchise has lost much of its appeal. Microsoft have also shut down a series of other internal studios like Emsembles and FASA.
In terms of exclusives, Xbox 360 won the intiial battle -- but lost the war to PS3 in the end.
5. Microsoft (and Toshiba) lost the hi-def media war. Blu-ray defeated and oblierated HD -DVD. PS3, which included a blu-ray player, turned out to be a batter deal down the road. I ended up buying a PS3 because I finally decided to buy a blu-ray player when blu-ray became the standard hi-def media.
Based on those experiences, I am more inclined to support PS4 over Xbox One in the upcoming generation. In fact, I do not even plan to buy Xbox One because of my overwhelmingly negative experiences with Xbox 360, particularly with Xbox 360's quality problem.
Xbox One's launch titles do not appeal to me -- neither do PS4's. However, based on PS3's (and PS2's) track records, I expect PS4 to ultimately build up a better library than Xbox One over time and end up with more and superior exclusives in the long run. I am expecting most of Xbox One's so-called "exclusives" to go over to PS4, based on what happened to Xbox 360's "exclusive" titles.
Finally, the $100-less price tag is very important to my decision.
I am coming from a consumer POV. Honestly, the "which console has better graphics" or "which console has more raw power" does not really matter to me, at all. I do not think it matters to most people.
So that's my take. What's yours?
