I have noticed that there are times when I could be flying around a planet's system and I will come across basically empty space that chimes as if something is there.  Much like the same chime when you run across a planet that is there, visible to the eye.

Should I scan that area when that happens?  Unlike ME2, I am a little relunctant to scan with the threat of the Reapers bearing down on me.

Yes, that chime nearly always means there's a fuel depot :-)

99% of the time there is something there. There are two or three systems with a ding and when scanned nothing is there.

Finding these fuel caches is an important part of keeping the Normandy fueled without having to spend credits. Most systems have 2 items to find: one on a planet, one fuel cache.

While the fuel depots are important, all you have to do in order to save credits is just go back to the Citadel. Though it does mean you have to disembark and then get back on the Normandy, you get free fuel refills.

Not sure if anyone said this before but most likely it's a free fuel cache .
