And yes...for all the long-timers on here, I fully realize the irony of having just used the phrase "best possible ending" to describe ME3.
EDIT: Checked the Wikia. If you download the last patch, minumum EMS to experience any possible ending is 3100. Multiplayer is not needed.

You don't need to play multiplayer to get the best possible ending. Bioware patched the minimum EMS to be low enough that online play wasn't necessary. You DO need to play it to get your readiness above 50% though, not that that matters. I don't know off-hand the minimum EMS for maximum flexibility in the endings, though if you search on here or check the Wikia site, it shouldn't too hard to find.

Just to be clear here: I don't think it was a patch that made this change. Rather, it is the Extended Cut DLC that made the change. So be sure to download Extended Cut (free) if you don't have it yet.

Actually, I believe you can get your Effective Military Strenght (EMS) above 50% without playing multiplayer:
1) Log in to the BioWare Social Network (BSN).
2) Go to your Galaxy at War map.
3) Click on one of the sections (such as Earth Systems Alliance Space). The section will expand, showing three locations.
4) Click on one of the locations. (For example, if you selected Earth Systems Alliance Space, click on Camala.) The mission briefing will appear. It will display the Galactic Readiness rating and the time required to complete the mission.
The Galactic Readiness rating will increase by the amount shown (for example, 3.17%) after the mission completes. The time shown is the time required to complete the mission.
5) Click Deploy to start the mission. The mission briefing will disappear, replaced by a timer. The timer displays the amount of time left to complete the mission.
6) If you want to zoom back out to the map, click anywhere in the section.
I believe you can have up to 5 missions active at once.
This is a way to increase your EMS score without playing multiplayer. But as billpickles pointed out, you do not need to increase your EMS to get the "best" ending. "Best" = most complete.
Although if you download the Extended Cut DLC (free DLC that expands on the ending), I am not completely sure if there is a "best"/"most complete ending. I recently reduced my EMS as much as I could (got it down to 51%) and had my EMS score below 3100, but the ending I got was the same as it would have been had my EMS been 3100 or greater. So I have no idea if the Extended Cut DLC changes that at all. Or maybe I had a hidden EMS increase somewhere. Who knows.

I believe the 3100 level is what you need for the "Shepard breath" in the destroy ending.

No idea. I discovered it when I was trying to see if there was a quick way to reset your EMS score to 50.capn233 wrote...

The Galaxy at War % carries across platforms (Xbox, PC, and PS3).

Nope, don't think so. It just requires you to be really bored.

I guess it is sort of neat that you can gain readiness while you are playing SP, but it is incredibly slow relative to playing MP matches.

I wasn't suggesting that one should sit before the computer and wait for the timer to run out. It's just that the other ways to collect EMS are fun themselves, while this has no other purpose than the EMS.RedCaesar97 wrote...
