So, with my current run, I'm playing a paly with a canon party. I figure that I need to do all the NPC quests before I get to spellhold, as my eventual party is going to be:

PC (Cav)
Jah
Minsc
Vic (need a cleric, and will probably romance)
Yoshi->Imoen (and I will Keeper Imoen into a single-classed wild mage)
NPC quests -> Jan (I like him and will need a thief after I lose Yoshi)

Once I take on Jan to get Imoen back, I won't have room for the other NPCs. Obviously, being LG, I'll have to turn Jan in when the law gets involved in our little conversation. However, I figure I can eventually bail him out of jail when I need him. At that point, though, I'm sure I'll have a party reputation of 20. So, with a rep that high, will he still be in jail and can I still recruit him at that point? Thanks.

While Jan is a better thief than Imoen, she not that bad - with help from the occasional potion bottle - and she is a better mage than Jan. So, why both (unless you really, really love turnip stew)? If your paladin is capable of telling a white lie, then Jan will be safely at home in the Slums if you want him in Chapter 6. Does your role playing extend to refusing to buy from Shadow Thief stores (which even Keldorn regards as only a venial sin)? If not, give Jan a break versus Trax. A neutral NPC will tolerate Rep=20, although, like Jaheira, they will do a certain amount of persistent ****ing. It's only someone like Edwin or Korgan that will immediately drop out if you recruit them. It's Viconia you have to handle with kid gloves - and by occasionally turning into the Slayer - if you want to hang on to her once your Rep=19.

Imoen won't be a thief in my game. Here's the thing. I want a canon party, I want the PC to be a solid frontman, and I want a wild mage in the party. Originally, I tried everything under the sun to turn Imoen into a dualed wild mage, but the engine won't allow it. So, I have to ditch her thief levels to make it happen.

I was always under the impression that once your rep gets to 20, neutral characters will stay but you can't recruit them. However, I guess that's irrelevant due to Vicky. I totally forgot about that. Considering I'm playing a paladin, and also trying to roleplay him, how do I drop my rep before getting the slayer power?

My character is not going to be a big fan of the shadow thieves. Obviously, Bodhi is worse, but he's going to limit his involvement with the Shadow Thieves. As for Jan, I personally want to tell a lie to get him off the hook, but I don't think a LG character could let that slide.

Simplest way to adjust rep is to remove Viccy at rep 19, rep jumps up 2 (capped at 20), you then add Viccy again, and rep drops to 18. Viccy seemingly has no problem joining a group with a rep of 20, but will not stay in one.

I think you're fine with lying for Jan. If I were to role play a lawful good character, I feel that the character would only respect laws that they felt were good and just. A lawful neutral character on the other hand will respect the law, probably no matter what it was according to the land. However that's just if you really wanted to get Jan into your party...ultimately I don't think that the PC would really care much about a random stranger to even bother to disrespect the local authorities or maybe I'm not really thinking the way a lawful good character would act?
