I've been paying on-again / off-again attention to the Mass Effect movie, half expecting it to be cancelled outright, and hoping that I'm wrong anyway. Last I heard, it'll be 5-6 years down the road, multiple movies with tie-in TV adaptations, ect, so I guess we'll be debating it for awhile yet, assuming I've even got the info right.

One of the bigger problems I've heard about adapting the story, aside from the sheer content size and characters, is satisfying the various gamers who would naturally want their personal canon to play out. It occurs to me that we do have a narrative fix for that, of sorts. The 3rd game has the end coda have the entire trilogy being a story told to a child from his (Grandfather? Elder?), and that many of the details have been lost. If the movie started with that premise, the story could be admittedly the Grandfather's version of the story, while having him concede that it might not be the true version of events...but it's true for him, ala Braveheart.

Now that I think about it, this will probably make the games play out a bit better for myself. Whatever future historian might know what happened, but not how it happened, and it explains all the dialog wheel choices in the games themselves. You're filling in the holes in the record with your own personal spin.

I'd rather not see a Mass Effect movie.

The reason why I'm hoping this project gets stuck in development hell, is that I doubt the film project will be given the support it would need from the studio to be a decent film. Instead it will likely turn out like 95% of all video-game-to-film adaptations, in being an attempt by the film industry to make some quick cash from an already established fanbase with little inverstment. It will be made on the cheap, with a cast from Hollywood's B and C lists, a hack director and writers, and shoddy CGI.

No thanks!

That being said I do occasionally enjoy participating it threads speculating on casting decisions.

Well, that's one positive reason I can think to actually like a potential 5-6 year wait for production, I suppose. That's a small eon in gaming industry terms and Mass Effect will have mostly fallen off the public radar (even with sequels in the pipe) - any screen adaptation would have to be decent to pull in the seats, and not rely on fan enthusiasm. That said, outside of the comics, I'm not terribly impressed with what media we've got so far. I haven't suffered through Paragon Lost just yet, but everything I've heard has been less then stellar.
