Yeah I typically like to have >1000 shields, unless I am using a fast character.  I sometimes play characters with less than that, but they become pretty tedious against late wave Cerberus or early Collectors (gold).

I would rather not build my characters around one specific consumable that the store may randomly decide to stop giving me.

Besides, if I'm using Cyclonics that means I'm not using Power Amp or Adrenaline Module.

Yeah, I used to be all about the Cyclonics. Now, I put Adrenaline Modules on anything even slightly tanky (especially my Plat Tsent) and Power Amps on nearly everything else. I'll still use Cyclonics on a couple of kits that have direct damage only powers that get their damage from combos.

Agreed. I know Cyclonics give you the most benefit when you use them on classes with high base shields and DR, like Krogan.  I always seem to play more effectively with those classes if I use Adrenaline Mods though.  Batarians with Adrenaline Mods move so fast they make Drell jealous.  I think it adds a lot of survivability.  My 6/3/6/5/6 Krogan Soldier or my 6/4/6/6/4 Batarian Soldier (both with Adrenaline Mod) are probably the classes I die with the least.

I tend to use Cyclonics more often on Engineers and Adepts, so I can max their powers without making them too squishy.

A few points in fitness may be the difference in getting shield gated or not when hit by a banshee warp/atlas rocket.

Even with 21 points in fitness though, that only happens on some kits. On most, that kind of attack will shieldgate you whether you put 21 or 0 points in it, unless using a cyclonic... And if you use a cyclonic, it won't shieldgate you either way, so...

Adrenaline Mods are more OP than Cyclonics on console most of the time anyways. I know some will rage against that but it's true.

Maybe, but I don't really concern myself a whole lot with not using anything that the BSN deems to be overpowered when choosing what setups I want to use.

As for Fitness, I usually take at least 3 points in it.

Actually, I gona agree with shaddy on that one.

My HFI has zero points in fitness (sniper build), while HMI has 4 ranks (claymoare build). I use power amps on both (I love dem stickies, they don't deserve even half the flack they get), and I feel myself much more comfortable with a male. Well, of course it's because I'm sexist, but also because stuff like ravenger goo, swarmers, mook bursts and different DoTs.

Female have smaller hit boxes though.

Her hitboxes are ok, she is no Demogrill, but is still adorable. IDK, I like women in combat suits... because I'm sexist.

Speaking from experience (mostly from solos):

A base human character (without DR) with full fitness + cyclonic IV can take a banshee warp on platinum without getting insta-shield gated. The DoT may shield gate you but it can be avoided by going into hard cover. I am basing this off the recent plat solo I did with phoenix adept.

Where as, a 3 fitness variant will get insta shield gated. This is a guaranteed death when there are other enemies shooting you at the same time unless you use an ops pack.

On gold, one could extend this to 3 fitness vs. 0 fitness builds.

A measly 300 health/shields doesn't make a difference when a bunch of captains or marauders or goons are gunning you down. But on the occasions when a random warp or atlas rocket or ravager cannon hits you in the open, I'd like to have some protection. I have been saved several times due to those additional points in fitness. ;)

If you want to play the game that way it's fine but you're robbing yourself. Why grind for credits for better equipment when you will just get bored with the same old farming and eventually lose interest in the game?

I don't actually play the game that way, I was attempting humor by being a smart ass as i know the box of shame infuriates many. I mainly just play on gold with the occasional dip into plat which I always think I will do bad on but then it turns out to not be to bad at all.

As for being serious about fitness, I tend to spec most of my kits with just the first two points for health as I run most with full melee setup. But overall I have to spec the 'core' powers even if they aren't considered that great as i consider them a major part of the character and fitness usually takes the hit. It has caused me some slow progression at first but I feel fairly comfortable in gold with little health now.

What's the biggest crutch?
Acolyte - for power scrubs
Harrier - for general scrubs
Hurricane - for picky scrubs
Reegar - for the blind
Fitness - for all scrubs
Grenades - for tryhard scrubs

For the cheaters not using controllers.
Arc Pistol
Kishok

Somehow the GPS gets very little attention.

I vote, Cloak. Cloak is the biggest crutch.

Same here.  I often go with 3 fitness, and a few of my build have 4, 5, or 6.  For exactly that reason.  It makes no difference at all when you have a bunch of random guys shooting you at once, but it can be a life saver when it comes to warps, rockets, swarmers, and goo.

Working fingers are the biggest crutch.

Look at that quadriplegic guy who did solos.  Only non-scrub in the whole game.

This is why they need to get rid of shield gate and health gate in the next game.

Is the game balanced when an entire tree can be ignored?

Except, even with maxed fitness, without a shieldgate any Human, Asari, Drell, Quarian, Salarian, Vorcha or Volus would be one-shot by nearly every enemy on gold.

Several characters also have unique evolutions on Fitness. Paladin's Fire/Cryo Shield. Shadow's sword Armor/Shield Damage. Drell Movement Speed. Geth Shield Regen Bonus.

if you define scrub as one who doesnt have 255 gel and op-survival and a hundred cyclonic 3s, then yes I'm a scrub. Fitness is a must have.

I have seen a lot of no fitness builds posted on the forum that have Cyclonic 4 . That is hardly a "no fitness" build and not very helpful to newer players looking for advice on how to spec a kit .

Well it really depends on the character. If you can really play a tank character without fitness, then power to you. But most people like their tanks to feel tanky.
