Has anybody explored the concept of using a ship to journey around large water bodies on an overland map? (For example, the Sea of Fallen Stars in Faerun.) I was wondering what experiences you had in implementing it?

Dark Waters had overland ships.

Tchos is also using them in an upcoming module: The Black Scourge of Candle Cove (see the youtube video linked to in that post).

Experiences? I haven't had trouble with it. It was my first overland map, except it's overwater. You can do anything with it, as far as I can tell. I just made the entire ocean space covered with a walkmesh helper. The only challenge was getting the whole party to appear as a ship no matter who you switch to, and keeping them all the same size despite racial size differences.

Dark Waters has custom ships with unfurled sails. Mine uses the normal NWN2 ships, whose sails are furled, which isn't as good.

The Path of Evil "overland maps" support ship travel, you'd just have to redraw a few walkmesh cutters where in the campaign it lets players walk over the water to represent local ship transit. The walkmesh cutters for the seas are only by the shore, the water itself is "walkable" if you could get to it through the cutters.

I think the only special thing about over water travel is getting the party to appear as a ship.

I remember that a while ago someone was making/looking into making ship battles, kind of "Battleship 3D" style. Maybe that thread was on the Legacy site.

Edit:  It was probably one of you guys.
