I know there is a big number of DW rogue threads out there, but I have very specific build advice questions, especially on how to spend my remaining ten talent points. Any input is appreciated, though.
So I realized I wanted to start a new nightmare canon playthrough DA:O and DA2, with plenty of time to spare for DA:I. It's gonna be a DW rogue (again, cause fun!), and I have decided to go for a Dwarf Commoner, becaue starting skills/talents are a good addition and I've never really played one before.
Now, after consulting the most relevant, if a little dated Rogue build threads, especially
- DPS calculations for a DW rogue: http://social.biowar.../index/223777/1
- Rogue Mechanics Explained: http://social.biowar...66/index/243304
- Dual Weapon Rogue by zeusodinra: http://www.gamefaqs....gins/faqs/59526
I have decided on the following: My rogue will start out Dex based, because I am looking for a bit more survivability than pure dps, and because it makes it easier to play without a dedicated tank (sorry, Alistair. I will make you King, though). I may chose to opt for the three talents necessary for Lethality later on, once my cunning is noticeably higher than my strenght, and than go hybrid dex/cun.
I consider the following talents to be absolutely necessary for this build:
[Rogue Talents: Dirty Fighting, Combat Movement, Coup de Grace]
[DW Talents: the first three of each of the three tress]
That's a total of twelve, and since I will take advantage of every chance DA:O offers for talent points, I figure I will have 26 to spend by level 20 (20 from levels, 1 extra lvl 1, 1 from Dwarf Commoner, 1 from Joining, three from Tomes), so that means I need to decide on how to spend my remaining 14 points. I have almost decided on spending four talents on Stealth, finding that immensely useful, so it's really only 10 talent points that I need advice on.
Here are some options:
- go for a DEX/CUN hybrid and lethality: 3 talent points
- go for Arrow of Slaying for adaptability/Insta-Mage-Kills and because it goes well with high DEX: 4 talent points
- go for Song of Valor or Song of Courage (doesn't go well with a pure DEX build, note that I will almost always have Leliana in my party): 1 or 3 talent points
- go for the Ranger's Poison Spitting Spider companion: 4 talent points
- go for the additional DPS offered by assassin, either the first two or all assassin talents: 2 or 4 talent points
- take the remaining DW talents, Punisher and/or Whirlwind: 1 point each.
How would you spend those ten talent points?

I would pick Assassin(4), Bard(3) and upto Lethality(3).

^ Thanks for your opinion. Do you think the final two Assassin levels are more useful than Punisher and Whirlwind. Lacerate seems kind of lackluster, and Feast of the Fallen will be pretty situational, since I won't be using that many activated abilites with this setup ...

Depends I reckon, on how one plays, what weapons one uses. Punisher and Whirlwind are great for a full sized weapon wielder, not as much for a dagger wielder.
However as the crit chance of a dagger wielder improves, these talents can potentially start giving better dividends - 4 crits at max for punisher, 2 crits at max per adjacent enemy for whirlwind. Since I play mostly as a backstabber with a regular tank, I hardly ever use whirlwind, but I do use punisher at times. Since you are not bringing along Alistair, you have your own variables to consider here - will you bring other melee characters, will you be in the thick of things once too often, you know stuff like that.
Lacerate essentially equates to say an extra 10 dps, perhaps a bit more for a CUNN build, which I think is pretty good to have. Feast of the Fallen may or may not be useful as you say; for me it's a good thing to have since I don't spend many(any?) points in WILL, & use three sustainables all the time - Momentum, SoC and the Tainted Blade. So it'd be upto you to decide if it's worth it or not.
As it turns out, I end up picking all four of the above talents by endgame anyway. But if I have to pick only two, may be I'll go for Lacerate and Punisher.

That sounds like what I may do, thank you for your long reply!
Has anybody ever tried putting Arrow of Slaying on a melee rogue for versatility and found it useful? It sounds so tempting, but maybe it's not as good as it sounds ...

I totally forgot about Duelist. I believe I will dare to go the pure Dex Route and take Ranger and Duelist - I think my last DW Rogue three years ago was Dex/Cun wird Assassin and Bard, and so it would be too similar a build. Final two points will probably go into Whirlwind and Punisher. This route seems to synergize nicely with the Awakening talents if I don't want to respec, too.
