Anything important to the game will be explained in the game. Or at least I'm sure that will be the intent.
If you didn't have any problems playing DA:O without reading the preceding book, you'll probably be OK with DA:I.

Asunder would probably be a good idea to read if you want to get the detailed version of what preceeded DA:I.
The talk between Cassandra and Varic at the end of DA2 makes it seem like the events in Kirkwall was what caused the war in Inquisition, but Asunder shows that DA2 is technically only the catalyst of what happens throughout the book and actually sets the war in motion.
The upcoming book Masked Empire also seems like it will help set the stage for Inquisition. It will deal with the Civil War in Orlais and the elven uprising there while Asunder sat the stage for the Templar vs. Mages conflict.
But I doubt it will be essential to read either in order to understand what it going on in Inquisition. And anything important will probably be summed up by NPCs and Codex entries in-game.
But if you want the more nuanced in-depth view I would recommend Asunder and the Masked EMpire when that one comes out.

This Masked Empire book when it comes out should disclose more info about the situation in Orlais.

Not required. I didn't like the comics/books anyway.

There is no need to read anything, and there is no reason why your protagonist would know what happened in some comic or book anyway. Go with what you experience in game and react accordingly.

To me, the books are all alternate universe stuff. It has no bearing on what happens in my game, unless I see a codex or something that says otherwise.

One should not be forced to rely on external sources of important information outside of the game.
