Vampires and other monsters

If a Pride Demon were to possess a lion, I would say it could become a Sphinx. There is a certain prideful intellect to the Sphinx of legend, that seems to fit.

Oh, even better! I like the way you think, man. Desire demon plus bird/flying creature equals harpy?

I would prefer if we would get mythological and fantasy creatures that are non-related to The Taint or demonic possesions - like when we got the wyverns. I'm kind of tired of all the demonic possessions. I would like if a manticore is just a manticore. No demon, no magical substance. Just a BW spinoff of a fantasy creature that is adapted for Thedas
But if there is no other way that it would make it sound fitting to the world without a demonic intervention, then by all means, go for it BW.

Manticores were however constructs of the gods according to legend, so it would fit into the "meta-lore" of the creature that they aren't natural beasts.JulianWellpit wrote...

We already got Griphons (though they are suppsoedly extinct now) and Wyverns who are naturally occuring beasts. It wouldn't be too much of a stretch to add Hippogriffs, Pegasi or any other less savage or "constructed" monster to the repertoire.
However, things like the Manticore, Sphinx, Harpies and Krakens who have all traditionally been connected to the gods of mythology, should remain unnatural beasts, created by the merging of a demon with a common animal. At least if you ask me.

That's why I said spinoff. I don't think it would hurt to have more natural, not possesed, non tainted mythological and fantasy creatures. It would bring more variety to the world.
Take the wyvern as an exemple : in most ( if not all ) fantasy settings wyverns are smaller dragon like creatures with two back legs and a pair of wings. In DA they are more panther like. I think that BW can pull more of this kind of spinoffs .
Still, you are entitled to your own opinion and I respect that.

Hear me out. A long time ago before the First Blight a Magister of Tevinter was working on a spell designed to give her immortality. The spell worked but it backfired due to the sheer volume of blood needed to power it. The spell granted her superior strength, agility, endurance and eternal youth but it also stripped her of her magical gifts, made her highly reactive to sunlight to the point where it could kill and left her with an overwhelming urge to gorge herself on blood. But the more she fed the more she passed on her condition to those she fed upon. But, As a result of the first blight with everyone focusing on the Darkspawn (because lets face it when you have an army of Hurlocks charging towards you with a big scary dragon leading them you are hardly going to pay attention if someones running around draining people of all their blood) the information about said magister and her newly converted followers was lost to time.
I always wondered how in Dragon Age 2 when you meet the Red Jenny Contact she was always in the Inn at night and kept mentioning that she and her friends liked a nice quiet city to play around in. Now we know! The Vampire Queen and all her friends are in Kirkwall and were paying Hawke off to kill the bandit gangs to stop them from risking exposure by massacring them all themselves!
Or not. As I have stated this is all pure conjecture. However if this is the case then can we have a quest-chain in Dragon Age Inquisition where we investigate the Friends of Red Jenny? It would be fun to investigate the nature of the curse and see whether or not it is reversible. Or we can just go stabity stab stab and kill all of them. Either way it would be an interesting storyline.

I always found the line that Hunger Demons possessing humans and sucking blood to be a bit flimsy. Always believed that in a world as diverse and wide as Thedas if they can make a storyline where Werewolves are occuring via Zathrians curse why can't they make a script where Vampires are produced through something along those lines.

You can't just decide that the world of thedas suddenly has vampires in it. They need enough background so their existence makes sense.
I'm all for variety in mobs, but that could be easier said than done.

I've had enough of them being everywhere in the last few years, especially in stories they had nothing to do with, I can't stand them anymore.
Anything, but no vampires.

Yeah, technically Fanged Skeletons fits the role of a vampire. They drain life-force and mana from their victims.
However I wouldn't mind seeing a "proper" vampire who was formally a human. Whether it be caused by a curse or a hunger demon is irrelevant. If werewolves can exist in DA then why not cursed humans who hunger for blood? It's not impossible in the DA universe.

Pfft. You might be sick of vampires, but I'm more sick of zombies. Good God, zombies have been the "hot" thing more than vampires in recent years.
Hmm. I wonder if a zombie vampire is possible. That way, Bioware could tick off folks who are tired of either or both archtypes.

Elven vampire zombie.
Vampires already have pointy ears so what would happen to an elf becoming a vampire? Would their ears grow even longer?
Apparently...

there is no such thing as an original fantasy race, so if they can put"standard fantasy races" in that compliment the lore and setting well im fineLuckywallace wrote...
I already dislike the fact Bioware put Elves and Dwarves in Dragon Age instead of original races (like Kossith, they are awesome) so keeping other 'standard fantasy trope' races out of the setting is what needs to happen in my book.

Maybe a wendigo inspired creature? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wendigo
I haven't seen any of those in games that I play.
I wouldn't mind having vampires in dragon age as more than just lore.
We need more flying creatures to fight too.

heh, well Vampires got old exremely fast because of Twilight. So while Zombies may have more out there. The fact Twilight exists almost doubles if not triples the annoyence of Vampires.

I knew there was another reason I disliked the Twilight movies.
I like how White Wolf handled vampires. Same holds true with the Underworld and Blade series of movies. And Bethesada's handling of vampires in Skyrim and the Elder Scrolls in general is decent, too.
The common thread in all of them is the fact that the vampire isn't just some wild, uncivilized monster. No, vampires are, well, quite vampirish in nature (no glittering in sunlight allowed), and they're also civilized — well, civilized until they're snapping at your neck for a meal, rather than to turn you into a vampire.
So, if that "kind" of vampire pops up in the DA universe, I could live with it. Yes, pun intended.
