He's bringing up that almost, if not, every lesbian in the series is a LI, which I think is a very good point.

She's not an LI for a straight male gamer playing a straight male character, no matter how horny I might be. So in what sense is she created for horny nerds besides lesbian horny nerds? And if we're talking about her existing for lesbian horny nerds, why is this more undesirable than straight romances for horny nerds, which I don't see him arguing against?

Staigjt guys can't make female characters? Right....

Anyway, MM has disapproved of all romances. This thread isn't the world.

This is not an exclusive ability for straight people, and besides the point insofar as lesbian romances were not created for horny straight guys. If they were, you'd convince Samantha to join a threesome instead of getting politely rejected for any sexual activity.

That's more consistent at least, but I wonder why he singled out lesbian romances for something that applies to all romances.

Untrue and completly fallicious.

Because homosexuality and transgenderism is the point of this thread.

What if the horny nerd is a lesbian?

Her existence, and how she is written, should not be to pander to anyone. A character needs to stand on their own without their entire existence being defined as "that chick who will sleep with me if I hit the right dialog options" which is how Bioware has handled every single lesbian romance from Liara to Samantha. Though it was really prevelant in Samantha because her entire existence seems to be "lesbian crewmember" and not Samantha.

Omg... Really? Dont forget amputees, mentally challenged, agoraphobes, cleptomaniacs, midgets, people who are infertile and talk about it often... Cant forget transvestites! I mean, we must include every single variation of possible human traits so as not to offend anyone right? And who wouldn't want James, as an example, in a lovely summer dress while hanging out in the Normandy....

This thread makes me both sad and want to laugh. It's a game. We really do NOT need every possible social variance....

Transexuality would make for an interesting character.

Again, just not in the hands of Bioware because they are still struggling with gay characters.

What does transgender mean in the context of a series like mass effect? It's been over 100 years, and we now have cloning technology and ways to repair and work on the human body in ways unfathomable today. We have cloned limb replacement that don't need continuous dosages of medicines designed to keep your body from attacking your new limbs. Gene manipulation, ways to attach body parts without much effort and surgical breakthroughs to keep what was once incredibly radical procedures from being anything but lethal or costly.

So why, in this futuristic society where surgery to change ones gender and appearance are probably incredibly easy to have and might even cost less then they do today, would we have "Transgender" people? I would imagine outside of having a transvestite, one who is one gender but identifies, dresses and possibly acts as the other because, instead of approaching it like this.

"I was this, but now I'm this, and that's all." What's stopping them from becoming just a man or woman or whatever, and being that?

Transgender in ME would mean said character moping about his trans background like Cortez did about his dead husband and needing the PC to play Spectre therapist to fix him/her.

Cortez is all right. But he also suffers from the same issue of being "the gay character" and not his own.

So this is only an argument against lesbian romances insofar as it's an argument against BioWare romances in general? Everything you are saying is either equally true (they'll sleep with you if you up-right) or equally false (that Samantha is defined solely by her lesbianism. I guess she used her sapphic powers to help you with Grissom and finding Cerberus, eh? Or she's a bit nervous and eager to prove herself worthy of the Normandy to attract other lesbians?) when you compare with straight romances.

I'd rather have cortez over a Jack McFarland clone.

Yeah, he's a decent character outside of that issue I mentioned. Same with Traynor outside of her joke of a "romance".

However, if it IS the case that they don't have enough time, I'd agree that it isn't intentional, and thus is not a political statement. That isn't to say Bioware isn't making political statements elsewhere, of course. But you'd be right, if that were the case (which we don't know yet).

I'm not sure "is this a political statement" is a useful question in the first place. Does the intent actually matter?

Isn't this just your cynical view of romance options in general, having nothing to do with homosexuality?

That's about the same type of analogy as "Gay marriage? What's next? Marrying dogs?"

Because I see nothing at all distinguishing that from how it handles straight characters... aside from having all lesbian relationships wind up ruined somehow, which is admittedly a problem.

Better yet........

.......all characters should be true hermaphrodites. This should be appealIing to all. No LI is untouchable at this point.

Yes because FShep/Liara or Traynor is clearly ruined in the end

Well, Shepard's dead or buried.
