Sometimes I will have a page selection option at the top of a multi page thread, and sometimes I will not. In order to advance to the next page of a thread, i have to go back one page, and then clcik the appropriate page number from there.

I have the same problem on FireFox 3.0.15. The page listing, that was there up until a couple of days ago, is now gone.

Do you mean the page numbers as well as the forward and back arrows disappearing from the page? If that's what you mean, I've seen that a couple of times as well.
If it happens again, try refreshing the page.
