Module file or folder only?

Hello,

I have been told that using only the folders for the module without .mod file is preferable because it's simpler to update on the server.

Does somebody can confirm or deny it? Is there good raisons to use only folder to store the module? Can it cause problems?

Hello Torenor,

Folders are more stable, easier to update and functionaly not much different.

I would advise you use folders.

I've made a lot of modules in module mode with no problems at all so if swapping to directory mode is a hassle I wouldn't bother.

I think you can just change little bits and pieces of a directory if you want to update but you might finish up with half a dozen patches and updates all over your module page because you'd never know who changed what. There's a console for quick fixes anyway.

i use to say that the .mod file was ok because it never crashed on me yet - then it crashed and i lost an entire external area (and lots of other work) by going back to my back up (always have one!).

Use the folder format.

if an area goes bad then all you have to do is pull a back up out and drop it in - this way you minimise the potential for losing other non-crash related work.

Surely you just load up a copy of the module and start again only ever losing about half an hour if that's how often you save.

making a back up every half hour is just a bit cumbersome - especially when you project is quite large

in dir format you can simply back up the files you want - and if you have gotten this far - knowing what file types are what is something to keep in your head anyway.

I'm not a fan of computers or files and folders so I'm just happy everything works and how it does can remain a mystery to me, I'm not bothered. That's why I like module mode and obviously it likes me because we've been getting on very well together for a long time.

I don't make backups I just save the module I'm working on and then "save as" it again with a different name and vice versa later on, it takes about thirty seconds so it's hardly a problem.

I know what you mean, I use to do this in the past. And if the toolset crashes I load the last saved version before the crash. But now that I gave my mod to testers in mod mode, I found out that it's not very good because I cannot make changes on the spot.

The console will do most things and the campaign or override folder could do the rest, it's just a bigger upload.

At the end of the day it's just a matter of what people are happy with and I'm sticking where I am no matter what people say because I've never had a problem using module mode and if I started messing around with files I know I would.

It's a bit like a car, I know where the steering wheel, gear stick and pedals are and can drive it without a problem but I'm not going to start swapping things about in the engine because in my case it would become more unreliable.

the toolset is not a car - you dont just drive it - like a finished game - you start with tiny pieces, and make it into something that someone who doesnt care how it was made, can play it.
