Does anyone know how stealing actually works?
I've taken stealing on my mage and can go around attemting to steal but often I just get stealing success but I receive no items or money other times just money. Is this how it is supposed to be or am I doing something wrong?
Btw this is on 360 version. Not sure if its different on other platforms.

I'm playing on the PC version and recently aquired the rogue chantress from Lorethain(spelling?). She has the steal ability and it works flawlessly. I have yet to fail when trying to steal with her. I get between 50 copper and 5 silver each time i use it. Very profitable. I dont know if there are repricussions for stealing so much, but i guess i'll find out.

So is it a bug then that I am getting the success message but receiving nothing from it or do you need to be of higher steal level to actually get stuff.

not sure what her steal is, but it might not tell you what you recieved. might just go straight to inventory. Try this: open your inventory and mouse over everything in it so it isnt glowing yellow. Then steal something. open inventory, and if anything is glowing yellow, that is what you stole. 90% of the time it is just coin that i have gotten..

Yea I've done that, nothing shows up as new, and no coin was added either. Just seems weird to have stealing successful message but not receive anything. Almost seems like you are supposed to get some items, or at least junk items at least. Have you stole anything other than coin with it?

Maybe the amount you steal is a function of cunning? Low cunning might explain your experiences if so.

Not everyone has anything to steal, and it will say *nothing to steal* when that happens.

Whenever you steal, and you get a sucess message, you get something. However, if it's something that goes on a stack then it won't be on the top of the 'newest entry' list.
For example, if you steal a health poultice, it just adds another poultice and places a yellow box (PC version) around the item.

I don't think so.Guurzak wrote...

The value of what you steal is based on the level of the target which is more than likely based on your own level (with that infamous level scaling system).

When you succeed, you get a short message in the middle of the screen saying steal success.
Also you get on the low left part of the screen another short message saying either item received or some amount of money.
Very difficult to identify what item you received if you don't constantly update your inventory (clearing those yellow higlighted new items by mousovering them).
A log of some sort is definitely needed....

A couple of points about stealing I've noticed during play:
*Stealing from the rear of an NPC yields a higher success rate than stealing from the front.
*You cannot steal while in stealth mode.
*Cunning improves your stealing success rate.
*You tend to get better items/more coin from higher ranked (yellow/orange) NPCs.
*If you take the stealing skill to level 4, you can steal from enemies during battle.
*Merchants in town and enemies during battle are probably your best NPCs to steal from.
*What you get when stealing is pretty much random. Only in certain places are the items fixed.
*It is possible to steal plot items off NPCs. For example, you can steal bread & water from the Prisoner's guard in Ostagar.
*The only repercussions I've noticed in the game is stealing from the Dalish Elves. They will send people after you later....even if all your stealing attempts are successful. Even so, you take no hit on reputation or with party members, although they will talk about your thieving habits to each other.
*A way to avoid party members talking about your stealing is to steal alone in free mode.
*There is a pretty funny dialogue with Duncan if you steal in Ostagar that shouldn't be missed.
