There are three confirmed companions and there is a little know about each, but I am not going to talk about the third. With Varic and Cassandra they really haven't even talked much about them.  The reason why we even know as much about them as we do is because the community is bridging the motivations for the characters from Dragon Age 2 and applying it to Dragon Age Inquisition, from what I have seen we have had a little party banter and not much else.  I like the fact they haven't really talked about the new companions either for it helps increase the sense of discovery instead of "oh, I know you you are going to be part of my party soon".

Although, we've now had Varric and Cassandra in DA2 as well as their own media spin offs (Cass with her own anime and Varric as a major player in the Dark Horse comics), so I'm not sure we can say we don't know much about them. But yes - let's keep it a mystery who our companions even are as long as possible, so that people interested in non-spoiler information, such as the release date, gameplay features and ancillary knowledge (such as the fact that the import system will be worked through the Dragon's Keep system for this game) don't have to to "dark" over a year before the game comes out.

But that's why I said images. Yes, sometimes they speak a 1000 words, but in this case, maybe they won't and they'll just be pretty.
