The argument that Gold is harder than Platinum because of playstyle is a rather misleading argument. One could use the same argument and say Bronze is harder than Gold with that argument. If you're using the exact same loadout, such as the melee Human Adept, you're going to have a harder time on Platinum than on Gold.
A competent team will make any difficulty trivial, especially at this stage of the game where everything is pretty figured out. However, the difference in difficulty comes in PUG, where there is almost 0 chance of failure in extracting on Gold, but a very real chance of not extracting on Platinum. Since PUG is most of what I do if I go online in ME3MP, the challenge is still there.
As for boss spam complaint on Platinum, that's greatly exaggerated. Most waves have at most 2 bosses at all times. Only Collector Wave 10 is a true boss wave spam. The rest are filled with enemies like Hunters, Phantoms, Marauders, Pyroes, etc. These same enemies you'd find in Gold except on Platinum, it's not limited to one faction.
You're likely going to kill more Primes in a Platinum Collector game than in a Gold Geth game. On Gold most waves don't have boss units at all; on Platinum nearly all waves have 2 or more of em. On Gold you can avoid boss units almost completely; on Platinum you're gonna need something to wear those bullet sponges down quickly, one way or another. Sounds a lot like boss spam to me.
Primes might show up more (I'm not sure if this is even accurate), but that's because the budget is much bigger. Not only do bosses show up more, but Hunters, Phantoms, Marauders, Pyros, etc also show up a lot more as well. So no, I don;t really see that as a boss spam. And Gold do have bosses show up most of the waves. Off the top of my head, Cerberus Gold gets Atlas on Wave 3, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11. I'd say that's pretty much the majority of the waves.
A melee Human Adept can kill most (up to 95% of all) enemies (depending on faction) using melee as his or hers primary means of attack - and still do rather well in the hands of a good player. On Platinum this simply doesn't work anywhere near as well as it does on Gold, regardless how good you are.
True, it doesn't work nearly as well. Problem for me is that since I've already made it work on Gold, there's not much challenge in that anymore. I have more fun trying to make it work on Platinum.
The real problem (with Platinum) is how it widens the gap between the powerful things and the rest. Using less optimal stuff has a rather small impact on Gold, but becomes huge when you try it on Platinum. I don't mind gimping myself on purpose, but there are limits to how far I am willing to go.
You're right. Using less than optimal builds has rather small impact on Gold. For me, that makes Gold rather unchallenging most of the time. I guess it really boils down to personal preference in this Gold vs Platinum debate. I like to take those suboptimal builds onto Platinum and see how I fare. Actually, that's how I discovered that SS-centric Shadow can work really well on Platinum and be incredibly fun.
Why is Gold more fun than Plat?

Unfortunately, that is not how things work. There is a lot of stuff that is completely unusable on Platinum, you can try all you want, but it is not going to work. That kinda defeats the whole "challenge" thing, no?

I don't think you fully understand what I meant. There's a difference between making things "harder" and making things more "challenging". Going solo with a level 0 Volus, using the Predator only without any equipment is indeed harder than using a fully equipped GI with a good weapon. However, kiting enemies around the map for hours with the Volus has little to do with challenging gameplay (it's boring as hell actually).
For some kits Platinum works reasonably well. When you play, say, a Winfiltrator Sniper nothing really changes when you go from Gold to Platinum. Perhaps you need to shoot stuff in the head for OHKs instead of bodyshots on Gold; and enemies deal more damage so you go down faster when you make a mistake. That's all good, and in this case Platinum does make things more challenging.
For most kits and guns Platinum sorta triggers a snowball effect. The number of enemies a melee Krentinel can OHK with his melee is all of a sudden cut in half > that means he has to expose himself longer to enemy fire trying to melee all things > enemies already deal more damage on Platinum + have a lot more units that can stun him + fewer opportunities to trigger Rage (for the much needed melee damage boost and DR) = very bad news for the melee Krentinel. Unlike the Winfiltrator Sniper, the melee Krentinel's combat abilities are drastically reduced up to the point that it makes little sense to even use melee as his primary means of attack.
When melee no longer is a viable way to kill stuff with, the incentive (for me) to play a melee Krentinel on Platinum is pretty much gone. Sure, he can do well throwing OP Liftnades and shooting his beloved Claymore. Problem is I can do all that playing the Assguard too - and have a great dodge, Stasis and Biotic Charge to boot.
Weapons are even worse on Platinum. You are forced to take a weapon that is effective against armor. If you don't, you'll end up shooting a lot of stuff for minutes to take them down. I think we at least can agree that that is neither fun nor challenging.

What are those things that are unusable according to you? What is not going to work despite all my effort? People have said SS Shadow won't work on Platinum before, but I have proven that wrong many times. You're right. Using less than optimal builds has rather small impact on Gold. Of course, even I have limits. But do you really find 0 Volus with Predator to be fun on any difficulty? If it's not going to be fun on Platinum for me, it's probably not going to be fun on Gold for me either.

Melee Kretinel is definitely much harder on Platinum and won't work as well as it does on Gold. No denying it. My point is that I have already done that on Gold. That;s why i bring it onto Platinum. I'm going to try to make it work, damn it. Yes, I don;t always extract, but when I do, it's that much more satisfying than pullng that off time and time again on Gold.

Well, are you talking about weapons like the Falcon and the Krysae? Like I said before, Platinum has plenty of other targets other than bosses that those weapons are effective against. Sure, I might bring a secondary weapon to kill armor faster, but the majority of the time, I'm using the primary to kill everything else. If you're talking about using Common and the majority of the Uncommon weapons, those guns aren;t much fun on Gold to me either. There's nothing interesting about them.
