[The Love Runner]

It'll be the First Class cast, but I stated that it would be the YOUNG VERSIONS of the characters I mentioned in my spoiler post, i.e. pre-original X-Men Trilogy. It'll be new actors for those characters when they show up in Apocalypse. Oh, and

I liked the movie. It had some really strong performances, well done action scenes, really smoothly integrated and and working humour - in a lot of ways it had most of what I'd wish for in a movie. But..

Besides trying to be a good movie in it's own right DoFP also needed to try to right the wrongs of past X-movies via the time travel plot. In my humble opinion they should have just gone on with the First Class state of affairs, without trying to connect old and new movies and cast. Because imo they did an admirable job creating an organically working crossover/reboot, but ultimately failed. Way too many things went wrong before, and they even added some new problems going from FC to DoFP (and that's not even taking into account the abysmal and continuity shattering first Wolverine movie).

@Galactic: It has been confirmed that the original cast (Stewart, McKellan, Berry, Janssen, Marsden) is done. The next film; X-men: Apocalypse will star the 1st class actors. I.e. Fassbender, MacAvoy and unfortunately Jen Lawrence.

Really! Not that I'm complaining, as much as I liked the original cast I have never been happy with the visual style of the modern X-Men ( costumes, makeup, hair, ), for some strange reason however I don't mind the 1st class mutants, not only are thier costumes cooler but they spend more time in plain clothes which suits the mutant characters after all most of them did not set out to be heroes.

I liked the motif of First Class a lot more than the 'original' Singer X-Men movies, as well. The uniforms and actors were one thing, but there's also the music. And frankly, Magneto's leitmotif alone blew any theme from the original trilogy out of the water.

I agree completely, I loved the First Class OST and still have it on my [portable music player of my choice]. 

 

Some things I had problems with in DoFP:

Mystique was mentioned above. She shouldn't have been in the original trilogy, and then there was never a trace of any kind of relationship with Xavier.

 

Where was Quicksilver during the original trilogy? Where during the DoFP finale? They established that Wolverine knew him when he was older, yet this was the first time he was mentioned (again excluding the FUBAR Origins). They gave us an interpretation of his powers so powerful and useful that he could have more or less solved the plots of all the X-Men movies by himself, yet he wasn't even used in the second half of this movie. I loved the character and his scene, but his inclusion creates a whole new continuity problem for me.

 

Can somebody please explain to me just how Trask managed to get his hands on most of the First Class mutants? Who apprehended or offed them, when and how? I can buy Angel, Banshee and the tornado guy. But please, Azazel and Emma Frost? A completely ruthless, powerful teleporter and the near indestructable second-most powerful (known) telepath in the world - I seriously want to know why they're not around anymore. It's established that mutants aren't exactly a well-known thing, and Trask's whole point is that mankind has no real defenses against them. Hell, we watched Azazel basically solo a whole CIA facility in FC. I don't need everything spoon-fed, but at some points I need more information.

 

Nobody noticed that all the Sentinels were suddenly full of metal? Nobody got suspicious that a few hundred meters of rails were just mysteriously gone? Also Magneto wasn't only magnetism-puppeteering them, but actually managed to reprogram them? Again, without anyone noticing.

 

Probably more nitpicky stuff, that I noticed but could roll with:

 

Based on Stewart/Xavier's appearance in the future segment we have to assume that after X3 he did indeed inhabit the body of his previously unmentioned braindead twin brother, who shared his disabilty for some reason?! Again, a little explanation might have been in order, especially since Wolverine's flashbacks destroyed any doubt as to wether the X3 events were DoFP canon or not.

 

Logan was chosen for the job, because only he would be able to recover from the massive trauma of being sent that far back. His reaction to being transferred half a century, when more than a few months would allegedly have destroyed anyone else: waking up completely unfazed. Also how did Kitty learn about the limitations of her new found power? How did she learn about her power in the first place?

 

And one that's got nothing to do with the events in the movie: why the **** does Anna Paquin get a more prominent place in the credits than Ellen Page or Fan Binbing? I know they shot a rather big scene with her, and probably a smaller one, but in the final cut she had a cameo of less than ten seconds.

All right. It's possible that this theory is out there already, but I'll go ahead and break it down for those who don't know it yet. Be prepared for a large amount of text.

Ok, let's assume there are two timelines: The "Original Trilogy (OT)" timeline and the "Young (Y)" timeline. Now, these timelines share some common elements: Mystique growing up with Xavier (which is how Old Xavier makes a reference to it in the beginning of the film), Trask and his Sentinel Program, Wolverine fighting in the wars of the past, etc.

1962/63 was when the events of First Class took place. However, there are two different versions of this film that happen. The one that we AREN'T shown occurs in the "OT" timeline. Due to some aspects occurring differently, this is what leads to Origins: Wolverine, X1, X2, Last Stand, and The Wolverine happening in the timeline (supposedly). The 1973 of this timeline is NOT the one we are shown in Days of Future Past.

Now, the version of First Class that we ARE shown (the version we DO know) occurs in the "Y" timeline. The branch of this timeline is, of course, separate from the "OT" one. The Future of this timeline is NOT the one we are shown in Days of Future Past (at the beginning, that is; we are shown the future of this timeline at the end of the film after the alterations that occur).

So, this means that we are introduced to the Future of the "OT" timeline and the Past of the "Y" timeline. When Wolverine makes the trip to the past, he doesn't arrive in the 1973 of the "OT" timeline, he arrives in the 1973 of the "Y" timeline. Due to this, the two timelines are now connected, as it is Logan's mind of the "OT" timeline in his own body of the "Y" timeline. This supports how the future and the past are co-existing simultaneously; his presence causes the "Y" timeline to be integrated into the "OT" timeline. McCoy also makes the river metaphor in regards to time: throw a pebble in the water and ripples will affect the flow, but the river somehow course-corrects itself.

For the two timelines to separate again, he must sever that connection, which is by preventing the Sentinel Program from being commissioned at any point in the future, which is successfully done at the end of the film. After this, the "Y" timeline now has a future path that differs from the "OT" timeline, leading to Origins: Wolverine, X1, X2, Last Stand, and The Wolverine to either occur differently or to never happen in the first place. (i.e. the new future as I mentioned above)

Why, is it because of Quicksilver? I'll be honest, I wasn't expecting much from Quicksilver in Days of Future Past but everyone ( including myself ) agrees that he was the highlight of the film, he was used in a very creative manner. Joss Whedon and the producers of The Flash TV series could learn a lot from how Brian Singer used his speedster.

 

I am not sure how he is in trouble. This is a guy that has created cult followings from his work for almost 20 years now and not only rode the Marvel Movie Universe train but made it the goal of every other studio is now chasing after The Avengers.

 

And I am not sure what you expect them to learn from this. Sure I thought the break out part was great and I was laughing with it like everyone else but the angsty prankster is not the Flash nor is it Quicksilver for the most part.

 

If anything they should of looked to the Justice league and DC animated movies to learn something about speedsters. Because it can be so much more then just moving fast.

Well not just Flashpoint (if we are talking about the DC animated movies which I love and that was a adaptation of the comics) but from thru the whole history of the charcter. He is a speedster but so many times he wins not by being that but by utilizing that skill in a different manner not expected.

 

Which I know that's as clichéd as it comes but that is why they are the hero.

It's fascinating that after all those years without a live action speedster we now get a TV Flash and two big screen Quicksilvers within a year, with probably a second Flash in the coming Justice League movie. Speedster overkill!

I don't doubt that Joss Whedon would do a good job with his version of Quicksilver, I was just pointing out that I had written off Brian Singer's Quicksilver before I had even given him a chance I was surprised how great it was ( the personality is very much Pietro from the comics and the Prison escape sequence establishes that in terms of speed, Days of Future Past Quicksilver is the current king of the speedsters, I would love to see how Joss Whedon would respond to that sequence ).

Man I loved this film easily the best superhero film so far this year.

How many of you stayed for the end credits scene? ugh! can't believe they stuck it right at the end, but it was awesome.

I have to admit my heart leapt a little with joy when Cyclops and Jean where there in the end, my favourite performances where from Patrick Stewart, James McAvoy(how is this guy not more popular?), Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Peter Dinklage and Evan Peters lol remember when everyone thought he was going to be terrible, I had given up on X-men tbh but this was so good can't wait for Apocalypse now

I do feel though, that if you haven't seen the previous x-men films it may not be as good, and I do wonder what

is the same in the two timelines and what is different, did Jean ever become the phoenix, could we get a proper interpretation of the phoenix saga now.

Those sentinels are nasty. Reminds me soo much of the reapers. There's just no way to win against them. No conventional way that is. And like the reapers, they still have the numbers to back them up even if each sentinel is nigh-invincible.
