At this point, the Singer-spawned movies have retcon'd so much of the X-men lore that I've completely lost interest in them.

Has any movies based on comics kept to the lore?

Some, not most.

The best ones have (Superman, Batman)

I don't remember the Superman origin where Pa Kent spends his life telling Clark to hide his powers even to the point of letting a tornado kill him, and then Superman kills his first supervillain by snapping his neck.

I also don't remember the Batman story where he went for years without fighting crime and hobbling around on a cane because he was depressed that his girlfriend died, before getting a magical leg brace that made it all better.

I must have missed those storylines in the comics. Maybe you could give me some issue numbers so I could look them up.

Oh... this hurts... :crying:

Kids today don't know their Superman lore, anymore, 'cuz DC went and retcon'd it in the eighties, and again in the oughts. :P

The original Superman was very true to the original lore.

Thank you for your co-operation

I thought it was tolerable entertainment, but there's plenty to dislike in that movie.

You're not talking about Batman, you're talking about a different movie.

And your condescending tone is hilarious, given that you don't know which one of the two movies was actually called "Batman."

No it was not, at all. Kryptons first ever apprence showed it to be similar to Earth(which Man of Steel did right, not the original Superman movie) I think we have a Reeve fanboy.

Set design is not lore.

And I think I'm done in here, entirely.

That's why I have a rule that says I never get out of the boat.

When the planet, which plays a massive part in the story is not the same as depicted in your source material, you are not following the lore. That has nothing to do with set pieces, at all.

Tbh, I've already excepted the fact that movies will never follow the lore fully when I saw Batman (1989)

But I still very enjoyed SOME of the movies I've seen

I'm pretty sure that the first theatrical movie called Batman didn't respect the lore very much.

I wonder if Days of Future Past leads into the Age of Apocolypse in this movie

Because of this:

"And X4 leads into X5"

You can probably count the number of comic-book movies that "follow the lore" on two hands, maybe one.

Most of the best ones just know how to work around the lore in interesting ways.

I think the easier argument is to point out that Luthor's evil plan in that movie was to sink California with an earthquake so that he could turn the desert property he owned into valuable beachfront real estate. I'm pretty sure that diabolical plan wasn't canonical, but I'm totally willing to be proven wrong on that.

In terms of the Nolan movies I'd say they came closest to being a very faithful adaption of the Bat - Specifically the central factors, such as a mugger killing his parents & background stories for most of the well known villains. Batman Begins is basically Year One The Dark Knight's plot is heavily reminiscent of The Long Halloween where Harvey Dent and Gordon take on the mob, with Heath Ledger playing a very Killing Joke-inspired Joker. The third movie had some stuff from No Man's Land & Knightfall, where they actually managed to portray Bane as a criminal mastermind excluding the rather disappointing ending he met at the end of it though. At the same time the movies claimed their own identity away from the comics, the same way the Arkham games does. I think that's a positive thing -- I don't really know why I'm writing this since I know jack all about X-men, so yeah... Anyway I guess I think of it like this about all comic-book-adapted-movies.
There's gotta be a good chemistry, between the source material and the movie itself, but without leaning itself towards either or -- Otherwise it loses its own identity and I also doubt everything can be covered up in 120 minute long film.

I always figured that was mainly the point of a film or tv adaptation. It doesn't have to be exactly the same so long as the themes and characterizations feel familiar enough to the source material. Course I also read a bunch of AU comics where the etablished lore get's tossed out the window on the regular basis , so I might just be used to it .
