Interestingly "mother" is similar for most languages....amma, ummi, emak, mommy, mama, mom, mother...maybe we all come come from the one source in the past...our close relation with our mothers makes we call our mothers with very similar way...

Her implication is that they went to another world and then came back to the earth, so "earth" refers to their world, not just dirt.

But she say "cast them back" sound like "throw them"...the Maker throw them back to the dirt...

But i am no English speaking, i can understand what you say :)

I think it's Indonesia, judging from the terms she put up in the earlier comment, such as "Ibu Pertiwi", it's an Indonesian term for "Motherland".
If so, I'm quite disappointed

It means to banish, so the Maker banish them to earth
hence the earth means the world in this sense

Seriously though, yes I am Malaysian, surprised? No?

Malays are descendants of Aryan, we come from Himalaya (Hi-Malaya), the word Melayu comes from Mala, means "egg", we are the cradle of civilization

Our relationship with the Lost Tribe of Israel is from Qatturah, Abraham wife....we mixed, and then come to the "World's End" that is peninsular Malaysia. It was not a peninsular originally but in time the sea rise up and divide this continent into Malaysia, Indonesia, Borneo and Philippine

It was the land called "Sunda"...it stretch up from Hindustan (India) up to Japan...that is why the original Japanese people was Malay called "Ainu". We also have relationship with Hawaian peoples and American natives

'Thedas' was originally an acronym derived from The Dragon Age Setting: the DAS. People started calling it that when the setting had no name, and it stuck. Hence, 'Thedap' from The Dragon Age Planet *g*.

In all seriousness, people in Thedas don't seem aware that there are other planets like their own, so they've no particular reason to give the one they're living on a name.

I don't agree, ancient human also not aware that there are planets, but they call this planet whatever they call it

Of course ancient Maya and so many others study astronomy, Arabs also study astronomy so the the term "Dunya" for this planet is not uncommon, and so the ancient Aryan they study astronomy too.....but they do not speak English isn't it? So where is "Earth" come from in English that refer to this planet? Is it a modern name?

Anyway, usually the name of the planet derived from religion, that is come from the belief that there is another world than this world, so in Thedas surely every race have their own name of the real world and spiritual world

The Elves called the Fade as "Beyond" but that is English

I'm pretty sure it's Al-Ard in Arabic - I've never heard Dunya in that context.

Al-Ard means "dirt", but it also could mean 'earth", Dunya is world in which also earth

Dabbatul-Ard is an animal that will come out from the earth or dirt in the end times in Qoran

Wal Dunya wal Akhiroh means this world we living now and the afterlife world

So this world, this planet, this material world is Ad-Dunya, Al-Ard is the dirt below you

Edit : yeah...maybe i have mistaken the context, thanks

Is Thedas even on a planet? I mean sure, we know there is more to the world than just Thedas since the qunari came from another continent, but I always assumed The "world" was just floating around in the fade. That doesn't explain where or what the sun and the stars are though.

I have a theory about that and i repeat here

The Fade is Thedas heart, the world is it's strong arm, by means the world is illusion

It is a box in a box. Both Thedas and the Fade co-exist, what you see as sun, moon and stars are just your perception.

This explain why they can see demons and spirits in "real" world, they supposed to be "unreal". Lyrium that connect the real world with the dream world.

In DA:O you can see many lyrium veins in the Fade. Now lyrium is supposed to be physical isn't it? That is why your dwarf Warden cannot use the lyrium in the Fade.

So, Thedas is a part of the Fade, when the Veil tear, it is like the aquarium have a hole, the water and the fish rush in...

Arcane Warrior can be half in the Fade and half in the world...see that? Their body can be half an half, half reality.

The Fade is unreality, the world is reality. Mages who can bring unreality into reality. peoples mind that make unreality as REAL

I believe that is the original concept in DA, that is why there is mental resistance, and Templar ability is mental exercise. As according to Alistair you need discipline and focus. Mental Fortress is a Templar skill that add large amount of mental resistance. In game mechanic mental resistance can cancel any spell cast on you, it will mark as "resist" on top of your character head. There is no spell coming out because it's cancelled

That is why i am disappointed with the changes in DA2...because i have build this impression since DA:O that magic is illusion, your mind make it real. If your mind is strong enough, magic don't work on you. It could harm the world but not you, because everything is perception, like The Matrix

I see. The physical stuff (Earth/Al-Ard/Erde/Terre) is mostly the same in every language but when it comes to the metaphysical meaning the words can be a lot different.

Unless the Qunari have another name for the place they live, I think Thedas is it. It would be interesting if at some point a group from outside the known world of Thedas is encountered to see what their name is.
