Perhaps the peoples of Thedas believe that the world is flat, and thus have no concept of 'planets'?

Well, technically speaking, we haven't named our sun, moon or solar system. I suppose the lack of a need to differentiate from another, the need for naming it doesn't occur.

We have. Their names are Sol, Luna and the Via Lactea.

(although Sun, Moon and Milky Way are consider proper names too in English-speaking cultures)

'Thedas' was originally an acronym derived from The Dragon Age Setting: the DAS. People started calling it that when the setting had no name, and it stuck. Hence, 'Thedap' from The Dragon Age Planet *g*.

By that same logic, Thedaw would also be viable, i.e. "the DA World" ...or Woda (the "World of Dragon Age").

Qistina wrote...

In any universe, every human speak English, so Thedas reside on Earth if taken what Waynne said literally. To name it other than Earth seems like alien, unless non-human who call it something else

Strictly speaking.. Nobody in all of Thedas speaks English. English is the language of England. What sounds like English to us would be Fereldan. (or.. "Feral" perhaps? ^_^)

...and for those who have yet to catch on still... her name is Wynne, not Waynne. <_< :police:

Thedas is actually a disk, which is carried by four elephants riding on a giant turtle. No one knows how it came to be there or what will happen if another giant turtle shows up.

Milky Way is the name of the Galaxy not the star system - I believe that's imaginatively named the Sol system. With enough time (and money) I expect corporations will buy the naming rights. So we will all be Nikeans, with one satellite probably named after a cheese, in the Coppertone star system within the Got Milk galaxy.

That's ... that's not how that works.

Who are they going to buy the naming rights -from-?

I wrote that in jest, but I wouldn't be surprised if at this very moment some over paid business brain was dispatching his minions to determine the possibility of doing just such a thing.

Google has failed me when it comes to searching for the name of the planet that Thedas and the rest of the countries rest on. Does anyone here have the proper name?

Yes.

Dave of Canada wrote...

Do they even have the concept of planets yet?

Which concept of planet? The Bablonians knew that Mars, Mercury, and Venus were special and that they behaved in a way no other stars did. The Greeks realized that there was a heliocentric system and that some celestial bodies orbited the sun like the earth did, and the Indians had something similar.

If you mean 'a thing like our world with maybe its own rivers and mountains and people,' there was a Greek novel written in 2 AD about Greeks sailing to the moon and joining a war that's was going on there. Moon people have faces like dogs and ride on flying acorns, btw.

That makes no sense. How does thinking the world is flat preclude someone from having a concept of a planet?

Ancient peoples are actually advance peoples much like us today and maybe more advanced than us...up to today we never know what pyramids are really about, but new findings suggest that pyramids are not tombs, but they are energy station for wireless electricity...that is the reason why the top of the pyramid was gold, it is a conductor

But what the pyramid is for if they are energy station? Maybe it was star ship landing bay....who know? What remain today is just remnants of the past...historians may have their opinions on things but they not actually know everything, history mostly based on assumptions.

It is a wonder how ancient peoples know about the stars if they are primitive peoples...we read what they writing about the gods, goddesses and on...maybe they are aliens, we thought it is all just literature or belief/religion, but how much we know that our language changed not the same like peoples in the past use? We today see science book and we can perceive it as science book...maybe 5000-10000 years later peoples read that science book and say it is "a myth and religion of ancient peoples", because the language is difference. Isn't it?

Let say the book show apes evolve to man, peoples 10000 years later say "this is the myth of peoples 10000 years ago, about an ape transformed into a man, this man is an ape god, ancient peoples believe this man is a deity that can disguise himself as an ape, we can relate this belief with similarity with Son Goku the super Saiyya who was a monkey boy before becoming a war god.....that is how primitive the ancient peoples was"...that's how peoples assume things in the past...

Maybe the ancient peoples are telling different things, but we perceive it differently because our language usage changed....

Let say, if everything today is destroyed, all our knowledge are gone, peoples are just want to survive and don't care any thing else but that. Slowly the civilization rebuild for 10000 years...

peoples at 10000 years later found a book called "The World of Thedas", they study it and make conclusion..."peoples 10000 years ago believe there was an age called Dragon Age, there was creatures called darkspawn. It seems to be their god named The Maker...some of the passages are negligible but we can say that maybe darkspawn was the cause of the great calamity that destroy the civilization in the past"

All the names mean the same thing. You do know this right? Also, what is this BS about races having different languages?

It is because, it seems that we who give names,we who create the perception of the world we living in...let say, civilization A meet with civilization B, A impose their knowledge to B saying "this planet named Weebo not Weewee", civilization B argue that the planet is named Weewee not Weebo

Different races have different perception on things....i understand now....although maybe we talk about the same thing, but you guys can't accept it because we don't have the same perception on the thing....
