I have Sten and Shale, but Alistair is my main melee fighter.  I'm looking to increase his damage.  Since he's got points in shield skills I want to stay with the one-handed variety.

Right now he's got the Oathkeeper.  I see some Longswords that have slightly higher dmg but lack rune spots.  Any advice welcome.

P.S.  sorry if this is the wrong forum, new here.

Best sword is starfang, if you have the warden's keep DLC. Otherwise with no DLC it'd be keening blade or imperial edge - both of those come very late in the game though.

But if you're willing to branch out a bit more, The Veshialle is a waraxe which is the single best weapon for a weapon/shield char. Bodahn sells that, but it's pricey. If you're not far in (which I assume if you're using oathkeeper) then starfang is much more achievable.

Thanks. I don't know how to gauge how far along I am, but my warden is lvl 16. Yeah I don't have quite enough coin for that just yet.

My next major battle is Jarvia so I've been doing a lot of side quests lately trying to get as ready as possible.

Oathkeeper is kind of underpowered if you're level 16... I'd be surprised you haven't found something better. As before, if you have warden's keep then doing that for starfang is still probably your best bet.

Any guide is always just the opinion of one guy. The reasoning for a dagger is that it allows you to go with minimal strength and put the majority of your points into dex, which gives you a highly defensive tank with poor damage. Which not only runs counter to having a weapon/shield char as a damage dealer, but requires a character to be built around it from the start.

Dual dagger mostly auto attacking warriors actually have nearly the DPS of dual full size talent spammers. It's actually more if you aren't so good at using your talents correctly.

The best one handed full size weapon is starfang, yes. The Keening Blade is the 2nd best full sized sword, and the Veshialle is the best full size weapon for a high str build excluding starfang. Although it is an axe.

If money is an issue, you could look into crafting potent lyrium potions, which is a tad time consuming but does yield a net profit. Else, since you're up to Jarvia, you will shortly be able to acquire Topsider's honour through the "an admirable topsider" sidequest, which is a dragonbone longsword with 3 rune slots, and which is completely free.

I really recommend you aim for the keening blade though. It's a great weapon, free to obtain, with a long side quest that spans multiple story arcs to obtain, and one of the tougher boss fights in Origins.

Cool, thanks guys. Appreciate all the tips.

And yeah I've found other swords but until now my overall dmg output wasn't a problem.
