I'm pretty sure you'll be able to compose your party of whatever combination you desire. This has always been the case, and I see no reason why it would change here.

3 mages is really not that viable on nightmare mode when all their spells cause party damage. Unless you get 3 mages who all know all the same single target spells.... boring.

LMAO. There is an in-game description of the "hard" difficulty of DA;O - you "need to make a sophisticated use of tactical pausing and as well as CLEVER comjbinations of SPELLS and talents". I repeat, CLEVER. Nightmare is difficulty for players who found "hard" too easy, it is again in-game description. Yeah, and it has friendly fire, thank god.

DA:O had friendly fire from normal difficulty up. Also, that didn't really matter, and a party with 3 mages and a rogue could easily disable and decimate everything, and the Arcane Warrior of the party was a better tank than any Warrior. Even on nightmare. Also I wouldn't call the tactics that were used "sophisticated" or "clever", they were rather cheap tricks like using doorways as bottle-necks, chaining blood wound and mass paralysis and in the rare cases where the mobs didn't follow you into other rooms you could just conjure up a couple infernos and let them die while you wait behind the safety of a corner, outside the reach of their arrows.

The problem is that the AI controlled enemies just can't adapt to a player that doesn't walk into the middle of their ambush like a complete idiot.

Every single difficulty in DA:O except "easy" had friendly fire.

And, no, you don't need "clever" anything with regard to AoE spells. Just need to disable an "aggressive" behavioral pattern for your melee characters.

Both DAO and DA2 let me compose my party anyway I wanted. My preferred party in both was three rogues and a warrior. So no need to stick to the Tank-Rogue-Mage concept.

Your Wrong... Whynee for a healer. Main character DPS caster. Morrigan Debillitator. Alistair Tank. Lilieana.

Whynee is healing

Morrigan is debilitating enemies mass para ect.

and me with the powerful spells can pin point them so that they do not interact with Alistair. Lilieana is at range so thats she Isn't a problem.

Source: I completed a playthough like this.

You had a party of five?... I thought four was max.

@UC SIM: I hope that mod also added extra enemies to balance things out... otherwise it kind of invalidates the difficulty level...

You technically don't need mods to run a party of seven in DAO. There's a console command to add Alistair, Morrigan and Dog to your existing party, so you pick three, summon the other three via console, seven-person party. It does make combat terribly unbalaced, and it's pretty much only useful for that "Andraste" high dragon.

In DA2 you can actually summon all the companions with the console (including your dead sibling) and have a party of ten in your hands. Again it completely breaks combat, and it's only useful for ridiculous enemies like Corypheus.

What? That's just wrong.

3 mages is not only viable on nigthmare, it turns nightmare into Ultra-Mega-Easy mode.

Fireballx3 essentially lets you slaughter all enemies because of massive dmg + aoe knockback. Combine it with blood magic attacks (Blood Wound), Group Heal via your 2 SH (since the PC SH/BM is far more OP than Arcane Warrior) and you just have to pick off badly injured opponents.

Not to mentionn how Mana Clash turns any mage boss into swiss cheese in seconds. And - depend on the RNG - arcane horrors and demons too.

Feel free to contact Bioware with your feedback about their in-game description, I'm sure they would find it extremely useful.

I fear it will inforce this... But I hope not. I liked in both da:o/2 to be able to take the party members that fitted my character.

In da2 I played with Merrill, blood mage Hawke, Anders and Sebastian as the main party on nightmare. It was fun. A little difficut, bit fun. I hope da:I leave room for that.

Well yeah, that's the point, to be able to use such differing parties without having to sacrifice the loot or exp from chests :)
