This month's challenge is "Dr. Who":

This year is the 50th anniversary of the very first episode and there is (I had a good search and can find) absolutely nothing on the vault. Imean how hard can a Tardis be to model? K9, sonic screwdriver. Then there are daleks, cybermen, Dr. Who style yetis, all 12 (including the 60's movie peter cushing version) Doctors, an incredibly long scarf (^_^), the face of Bo, Captain Jack - the list goes on and on.

This theme was suggested by Tarot Redhand.

Guidelines:
  • It must be fully working in game.
  • Use of vanilla NWN or publicly available texture is fine. Just remember that NWN textures must have dimensions in powers of 2 (2, 4, 8, 16, 32, etc.).
  • Teamwork is welcome.
  • Beginners most welcome. Don't be afraid, just try, you'll be surprised!
  • "Custom Content" includes many sorts of things: models, scripts, prefabs (areas, items, creatures, conversations, quests, etc.), sounds, portraits, or anything else new for the game.
  • All submissions must be finished, working, and emailed to NWNCCCMakers@gmail.com (or a non-Vault link provided) by December 1st, 2013 at 10 AM EST. Sooner than that is perfectly fine too. ;-)

Somethings you could include in the download/email that would make packaging everything up easier and faster:
  • 2da lines needed.
  • Screenshot from in game for use on the vault page (this also gives me hints on how to display the new goodie). Formats: .bmp, .jpg, .png, or .tga
  • Portraits (if needed) of your new goodie. Placeables and monsters should include a portrait.
  • Inventory icons (if needed) of your new goodie.
  • Any credits you would like listed.
  • If this is your first entry, please tell me what name you would like your work listed under and provide a link to your other NWN content if you want that displayed as well (the link bit is totally optional).
  • Also if you would like an invite to the CC Makers group, send Rolo Kipp a friend invite. The group is nothing spectacular, mostly just documentation on 2da lines.
  • If you are doing tileset content, *please* let me know ahead of time so I can get you the set and itp files to work with. I’m horrible at merging those so this bit you will need to provide.

Remember, the Challenge is all about fun, sharing, creativity, and surprise!

This thread is for all sorts of discussion about this month's theme: ideas for things to make, questions/concerns, announcement of what you intend to make, screenshots of work in progress and/or finished projects.

If you want to discuss the Monthly Custom Content Challenge idea as a whole or wish to submit ideas/themes for future monthly Challenges, please post in its thread here.
When submitting a new theme, please provide a title and short summary of the theme.

If you have a technical question about some custom content creation, please create a separate thread so that the answers can be found later by anyone, not just people interested in this Challenge. We'll try to help!

Have no fear and join the fun!

And finally, you can:

Submit theme suggestions.
Vote for December's theme.

Sadly, I am not (yet) a Dr. Who fan. I've only seen a couple of full episodes over the years. I'm sure once I get started I won't want to stop until I've seen them all, and that I just do not have time for. Maybe in 15 years once the last of my kids leaves for college...

For ideas for people like me, we can always do a Google web/image search for "dr. who creatures", "dr. who objects", etc.

Er... I suppose everyone's expecting me to do something significant now, aren't they?

Trouble is, I've spent the best part of a year - with a murky "dead computer" hiatus - doing piles of Doctor Who stuff for these Modules I'm really, honestly going to get finished by the 23rd. Probably. Thus, by this point I've created all the DW Creatures, Placeables and Tilesets that I needed for my stories (with Henesua's help in one vital area)... and it would be just a bit of a cheat to dump all that stuff on the CCC and pretend I just did it all now, this month...

I think I've done most of the Creatures in the series that were A any good and B within my ability to do a halfway decent digital translation of, plus lots of Dalek variants thanks to Henesua. (Just finished the "Remembrance..." Special Weapons Dalek in time to add it to the relevant Module)... and as for the unutterable garbage that purports to be the rubbish, so-called "new series", I haven't the remotest interest in doing anything related to that... so I'm stuck for ideas at this instant for anything further... or at least, ideas that aren't insanely over-ambitious.

More to the point, I keep saying I'm hoping to get the actual Modules done by the 23rd (the anniversary) and there's still lots of bugs to be hit with outrageous bricks so that doesn't leave much time for things like sleep or making new CC...

But hopefully I'll think of SOMETHING to add for this CCC. I mean, I dabbled with the Drow, so I've got to be able to think of something quick I can do for the Doctor, 'cause we go way back...

...time. Yup. <*no*!>
The really long, ugly... <*nooooooooooo*>

Might do the floppy hat, too. <*raven-sigh*>
What? It keeps you dry. <no sense of style, old man>
Heh.
Everything comes back in style. <and you're the exception that proves the rule>

I was going to suggest that someone did that scarf :P worn by the 4th Doctor. Oh and you might want to make a fez as well (see list below).

Given that the show is 50 years old (minus 3 weeks) there are absolutely oodles of pictures out there. Also I realise that not everyone is totally au fait with the show. Given these 2 together, instead of producing a thread with loads of pictures on it, I have come up with a lot of links that will take you to some relevant pages.

Dr. Who Wikipedia Page,

Google image search results pages for individual actors portaying the Doctor.

1st Doctor, 1960's Movie Doctor, 2nd Doctor, 3rd Doctor, 4th Doctor, 5th Doctor6th Doctor, 7th Doctor, 8th Doctor, 9th Doctor, 10th Doctor, 11th Doctor (and with fez) and the soon to be seen 12th Doctor (this years chrismas special).

Dr. Who Companions Wikipedia Page

Dr. Who list of Villains Wikipedia Page

Google image search results pages for other things relating to the doctor.

The TARDIS, K9, Sonic ScrewdriverCompanions (Leela ), Daleks and Various Monsters

Hope these are of use.

I guess I could submit my homemade classic console, based on the console of the first three doctors. Although I must warn that the model might be slightly large in filesize (it is 1MB excluding textures, normal or outrageous?). There are lots of polygons that are embedded in the model though, not sure if this would be a problem. On the other hand, it does have a fully moveable time rotor that comes with it.

I originally made this thing from scratch when PHoD posted something along the lines of ''my console is currently pants and being hit with bricks''. I am however a beginner in modelling and currently do not have any submissions on the vault. Also, I have been wanting to do doctor who related content since 2009 although the vast amount of work, combined with my lack of skill, always made me lose interest before I really got going.

I currently have 2 versions of Tardis exteriors from ''modern Who'' that are working ingame (windows with self illumination, no glow since auroraDlights refuse to work for me), lacking portraits as well like the afore mentioned console. I have been wanting to make the classic console room, but I don't know how to make tiles. My tiles always crash the game for some reason. Lastly, I have been planning to make faces for all known doctors, I already have high poly models, I can either bring the poly count down on those or start over with low poly models. I'll have to see.

For now, I think the Classic console and maybe one of the Tardis versions could be up for submission.

Edit: two screenshots can be found in my so called ''projects'' gallery.

PHoD has resurrected a discarded idea from his Doctor Who Modules and is hitting it with specially created Outrageously Huge Bricks - and even hopes to have time to reinstate it in the relevant Module...

I'm building the gigantic Emperor Dalek, largely based upon its appearance in "Evil of the Daleks" but somewhat updated and EVEN BIGGER. It's going to include all that girdery stuff that surrounded it, plus the tubes and cables and things...

I already had the basic shell done so I should be able to get in finished fairly quickly, with any luck.

The console is almost ready for release, the only things to worry about at the moment are the filesize (currently 1.85MB since buttons and switches on the console boost the poly count, this should be further optimized I guess) and the presence of a usenode.
Does anyone have tips on filesize reduction?

@MerricksDad: For a preliminary version, that is quite a good sontaran. Although I must say that a sontaran with a crossbow sort of looks silly!

Apparently some Doctor Who fan site somewhere has put up all the screenshots from my Doctor Who Project, hailed it as an astoundingly great epic whassname thing, and apparently made it out to be something of rather greater scope than it is and have thus, for reasons entirely unknown to me since I was unaware of any of this until about 16 hours ago, incurred the wrath of the BBC.

The BBC, apparently now of the opinion that the PHoD Doctor Who Project will "adversely affect sales of licensed products" and topple the entire foundations of civilization or some such crap, have started coming on all heavy and have banned PHoD from releasing a NWN Doctor Who series.

They've vetoed the whole thing on pain of "legal ****" and there has been much argument. I pointed out the patently obvious regarding the "epic scope" of a few Modules and some CC for a decade-old game but the Blighted Baboon Corporation were not open to reason. Thus they've gone all fascist oppressor and pulled the plug very firmly.
NWN DW just died.

So the Emperor Dalek, and everything else I've spent two years working on, has been thrown in a big, unmarked bag and tossed in a corner. Right now, I don't want to even hear mention of the word "Doctor Who".
Alright "words"; I knew that.

They're just JEALOUS because I own more Daleks than they do. (See some daft screenshots of the PHoD menagerie in my album thingy).

Hold on, what fansite are we talking about here? And did you receive an e-mail from the BBC? Surely the BBC will understand that this is a fan project without the purpose of monetizing on it?

I haven't a shred of care for Doctor Who, but I am unsure who I want to slap harder, BBC or that fan-site. That seriously sucks though, and two years of work is dreadful to just lose at a drop of a hat. Sorry that happened, hope it gets sorted out and you can continue work, but I know how that works, doesn't sound likely.

Eh, file off the trademarks just enough to let it slip through and release it as an original project. That's why I can play a game where totally-not-Illithids accidentally landed a shard of their distant star in the middle of a city of not-Deep Ones, forcing them to the surface and the the Coast of Bones to survive, despite D&D having Illithids pretty well trademarked

Its basically Legal being a bother and showing that, yes, they are defending their trademark

I want to remove the weapon nodes on the model and install one of three weapons I have picked out. I'm going to make a Sontaran handgun, rifle, and medical scanner. I may also need to create some vfx to go along with weaponfire.

I'm also planning on doing a Sontaran Field Marshal with his scepter and power glove.

If I get time, I will do a 1800's tuxedo Strax.

Working on some weapons for Strax and friends

Image IPB

ps: they shoot crossbow bolts.....bla. So what is the best way to set up this creature weapon so they use the crossbow animations but fire a plasma bolt on attack? PM me some hints and tips. Its been a long time since I set up this kind of attack.

I'll give a sneak peek of my two nearly finished placeables as well:

Image IPB

Both of them posess an activated and deactivated state for animations. For the Tardis exterior that consists of the fade-in and fade-out on landing and take-off whereas the console's time rotor moves up and down when activated.

Still working on Sontaran stuff. Probably not going to get much more done with it. Stuck on getting weapons to fire off a non-crossbow round. Here's what I've done so far:

Added a new spell called Sontaran_Gunfire
Given Sontarans with attached guns 99 charges of Sontaran_Gunfire
Overridden DetermineCombatRound() so that Sontarans ONLY use Sontaran_Gunfire

Here's the problem:

When I override DetermineCombatRound(), basically I am using onCombatRoundEnd ->

ClearAllActions() to stop them from attempting to revert to ranged weapons equipped
CastSpellAtObject() on GetNearestEnemy() to force the Sontaran to use his pistol or rifle.

The problem is that ClearAllActions() causes units to drop their ready stance -- OR -- using CastSpellAtObject() with a spell having a casting animation of "attack" causes the caster to reset to idle when finished with that attack. I've never really noticed going-to-idle when archer classes use their attack-cast abilities. Either way, this is kinda gimpy looking.

Besides the gimpy flavor I am getting, add to that the fact that attacks per round does not modify the number of "shots" the Sontaran will fire. Using a spell to fire off the rifle causes you to have ONE and ONLY ONE shot per round.

I was thinking of creating a new bolt projectile instead, but I'm guessing making a new bolt projectile ALL bolt-using weapons could use would be more disruptive to games than just making the spell. But I don't know. Maybe I should do that. It would solve ALL the issues.

Alternately, I was thinking I might be able to override the cast-out animation in sontarans model by pasting the range attack sequence over the cast-out sequence. Still would not fix attacks per round issues.

I may try having the spell script force the ranged attack sequence to stutter and fire off multiple shots that way. Do like megaman and rifle off 3 rapid bursts before a pause at end of combat round.

I'd ultimately like the units to fire off ammo using a custom crossbow and rely on built in attack functions, speeds and attack per round data.

Suggestions?
