Not sure if this has been brought up before; i'm sure it has. If it has then just merge/purge my brilliant idea. But, couldn't ME4 logically take place between ME1 and 2? There are two years to play with where Reapers aren't much of a thing, no Shepard, and the rest of the Normandy crew had dispersed. We can play with all the races/classes/technology that defines Mass Effect without worrying about the consequences of the ending, and it wouldn't technically be a prequel to the series.
Possible time period for sequel

That appears to be some of the timeline in the Foundation comics out now.
It's a fun enough idea since I'd to just play another sci-fi RPG, but I don't think these sort of side stories have any longterm appeal.
